Dehaloperoxidase: An enzymatic Swiss army knife

Talita Malewschik et al.

Summary: The hemoglobin from the marine worm Amphitrite ornata has multiple enzymatic activities in addition to its O-2-transport function, where the globin, named dehaloperoxidase (DHP), serves as a multifunctional catalytic hemoglobin. DHP employs four mechanisms for substrate oxidation as a defense mechanism against toxic metabolites and is particularly emphasized for its peroxygenase activity.
