Characterization of Surface Modified Nettle Fibers for Composite Reinforcement

Subramoniapillai Viju et al.

Summary: One of the major issues in using plant fibers for composite fabrication is their hydrophilic nature, which affects the interaction between fibers and the matrix. In this study, nettle fibers were chemically treated and their characteristics were investigated. The results showed that chemically treated nettle fibers have the potential to be used as reinforcement material in composites.

Recent Progress on Natural Lignocellulosic Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Review

Gokul Kannan et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in research on natural fiber-reinforced composites due to their abundance, low density, biodegradability, renewability, and cost-effectiveness. These composites require less energy to fabricate compared to synthetic fiber composites and offer comparable properties, making them a potential substitute. The review analyzes the types of natural fibers used in composite fabrication and discusses their physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and tribological properties, as well as important aspects such as fiber extraction, chemical treatments, manufacturing methods, hybridization, interfacial adhesion, and various applications. The findings establish the potential of natural fiber composites for future needs in different applications by understanding their strengths and weaknesses.

Nettle leaves-based sulfonated graphene oxide for efficient hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose

Hadiseh Tondro et al.

Summary: The study developed a green porous graphitic carbon through iron-based catalytic graphitization of nettle as precursor for synthesizing sulfonated graphene oxide catalyst. Characterization of nettle-derived porous graphitic carbon, graphene oxide, and sulfonated graphene oxide revealed their morphological and physicochemical properties. Sulfonated graphene oxide showed a layered soft structure with high surface area and density of functional groups, while both graphene oxide and sulfonated graphene oxide possessed thin nanosheet-like structures. Using sulfonated graphene oxide as catalyst, hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose resulted in high glucose yield and selectivity under optimized conditions.

Development of Sustainable and Functional Fabrics from Recycled and Nanocomposite Polyester Fibers

Solomon Addis et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial knitted and woven fabrics were developed using recycled polyester and silver nanocomposite fibers, with different blend proportions resulting in fabrics with varying properties. Increasing the percentage of silver nanocomposite fibers in the blend led to higher antimicrobial efficiency, although it also caused irregularity in fabric thickness and a decrease in tensile strength. The recycled polyester fibers in the blend showed good antimicrobial properties, with a reduction of bacterial colonies exceeding 90% for both E. coli and S. aureus in all fabric samples.

Kazeem Olabisi Odesanya et al.

Summary: The continuous exploration and utilization of high-performance fibers, derived from renewable sources, for ballistic applications is driven by the need for better protection against various kinds of ballistic impacts and threats. The development of ballistic protection materials with improved performance and low weight has been a focus in recent decades due to increasing cases of threats and insurgencies. This review aims to provide an overview of the progress and advances in natural-based anti-ballistic composites, including fiber/matrix selection, impact energy absorption, ballistic simulation, and economic cost analysis.

Static stability analysis of carbon nanotube reinforced polymeric composite doubly curved micro-shell panels

Yong Huang et al.

Summary: The study developed a size-dependent model for a comprehensive analysis of static stability in doubly curved micro-panels made of composites reinforced with carbon-based materials. Results showed that CNTs reinforced composite curved shells exhibit a hardening response under buckling, and that changes in CNTs weight fraction can significantly alter the static stability characteristics of the shells.

Behavior of Elastic Therapeutic Tapes under Dynamic and Static Conditions

Hermela Ejegu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relaxation behavior of therapeutic tapes under different thermomechanical conditions and to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of selected kinesiology tapes. The results showed that at lower strain rates and higher loads and temperatures, the therapeutic tapes exhibited higher loss of internal stress and faster efficiency losses, leading to rapid decreases in stress under all selected conditions.
