The PIOLab: Building global physical input-output tables in a virtual laboratory

Hanspeter Wieland et al.

Summary: The PIOLab is a virtual laboratory designed to build global physical input-output tables by utilizing secondary data from various models in industrial ecology. It is part of the industrial ecology virtual laboratory concept, offering a collaborative research environment to address challenges in constructing gPIOTs efficiently. The PIOLab's analytical capabilities are highlighted through the example of global iron-steel supply chains, showcasing its ability to provide mass-balanced indicators for different regions and economic sectors.

Critiques of the circular economy

Herve Corvellec et al.

Summary: Critiques addressed to the circular economy and circular business models focus on their diffused limits, unclear theoretical grounds, and structural obstacles. The sustainability value of the circular economy is uncertain compared to what its advocates claim.

Material efficiency and its contribution to climate change mitigation in Germany : A deep decarbonization scenario analysis until 2060

Stefan Pauliuk et al.

Summary: Germany has successfully reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% since 1990, with a national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. While energy efficiency measures have been established, further reductions will require a focus on material efficiency, such as product lightweighting, material reuse, remanufacturing, and product lifecycle extension. Sector-specific research has shown significant emissions savings potential through material efficiency strategies, and implementing such measures could further reduce emissions by 19-34% in passenger vehicles, 27-31% in residential buildings, and 14-19% in non-residential buildings by 2050.

Gender in sustainability research: Inclusion, intersectionality, and patterns of knowledge production

Venera R. Khalikova et al.

Summary: This study investigates gender inclusion and intersectionality in sustainability research, revealing gender differences in collaboration patterns and a lack of attention to gender issues in industrial ecology. Recommendations are made to critically approach gender using theoretical lenses from gender studies scholarship to better assess environmental impacts on diverse backgrounds.

Methodology and optimization tool for a personalized low environmental impact and healthful diet specific to country and season

Christie Walker et al.

Summary: In order to address increasing disease rates due to poor eating habits, a major shift in dietary patterns is needed, with optimal diet composition varying depending on location, season, and personalized dietary needs. By developing a methodology to build a database specific to a given country and month, which includes life cycle stages of food items and their environmental impacts, a detailed and personalized, healthful, low impact diet can be developed using linear optimization. Results show marked differences in diet composition depending on country, season, and impact considered, with the lowest impact diet containing a mix of local and imported foods as well as fish.

Life cycle assessment of lithium-ion battery recycling using pyrometallurgical technologies

Mohammad Ali Rajaeifar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared three pyrometallurgical technologies for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries in terms of global warming potential and cumulative energy demand. Results show that shifting to DC plasma technology could significantly reduce the environmental impacts. Factors such as metal recovery rates and energy intensity of the electricity grid affect the results, but the best option remains the same.
