Effects of waterlogging and salinity increase on CO2 efflux in soil from coastal marshes

Ya-Lei Li et al.

Summary: Coastal marshes are important in sequestering carbon, but are vulnerable to global change. This study investigated the effects of waterlogging and salinity on soil CO2 effluxes in Spartina alterniflora marshes. Waterlogging suppressed soil respiration during inundation but increased it during reaeration, while salinity levels had varying effects. The study found that changes in root biomass and microbial activities played a key role in soil respiration variations under different hydrological treatments.

Salinity controls soil microbial community structure and function in coastal estuarine wetlands

Guangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study characterized soil bacterial communities and microbial functional genes in a coastal wetland ecosystem across a salinity gradient, revealing the critical role of soil salinity as an environmental filter on microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes. Higher bacterial richness and phylogenetic diversity were observed in saline soils, with specific taxa more prevalent in different salinity conditions. Salinity filtering effect shapes soil bacterial community composition and inhibits soil biogeochemical processes in estuary ecosystems.

Distribution, sources, and decomposition of soil organic matter along a salinity gradient in estuarine wetlands characterized by C:N ratio, δ13C-δ15N, and lignin biomarker

Shaopan Xia et al.

Summary: Although the critical role of coastal wetlands in mitigating climate change, sea-level rise, and salinity increase is increasingly recognized, mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in estuarine wetlands remain poorly understood. New research has shed light on the sources, decomposition, and storage of SOC in estuarine wetlands, revealing the dominant mechanisms of kinetic isotope fractionation during microbial degradation and preferential substrate utilization. Multiple indicators, including C:N ratios, delta C-13, delta N-15, and lignin biomarkers, are essential in deciphering the decomposition and source of sedimentary organic matter along the river-estuary-ocean continuum.

Desalinization via freshwater restoration highly improved microbial diversity, co-occurrence patterns and functions in coastal wetland soils

Laibin Huang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of desalinization via freshwater restoration in coastal wetlands by analyzing microbial communities and activities. The results showed that freshwater input significantly increased soil organic carbon content and improved microbial diversity and functions in restored wetlands. The recovered microbial diversity and abundance of specific bacteria in restored wetlands were similar to those in original freshwater wetlands.

Long-term fate of rapidly eroding carbon stock soil profiles in coastal wetlands

Yadav Sapkota et al.

Summary: The study found that in highly eroding marsh areas, the carbon density in the soil increased with depth, highlighting the need to consider deeper layers for blue carbon stock assessment. At the estuarine bottom, the age of the carbon was 388 +/- 84 years BP, indicating that recently eroded wetland carbon is not reburied in the estuary.

Drivers of soil salinity and their correlation with climate change

Deepthi Eswar et al.

Summary: Climate change has impacted various spheres, including soil which is essential for human survival, leading to increasing prevalence of soil salinisation and posing a threat to future food security. The phenomenon of soil salinity is found mainly in certain regions and is influenced by factors such as sea level rise, improper irrigation, and inadequate drainage, highlighting the urgent need to address this issue while considering food security and economic status of populations dependent on agricultural ecosystems.

Typhoon-induced increases in porewater nutrient concentrations and CO2 and CH4 emissions associated with salinity and carbon intrusion in a subtropical tidal wetland in China: A mesocosm study

Chun Wang et al.

Summary: Typhoons can alter carbon cycling by increasing carbon inputs and oceanic water intrusion at low latitudes. The study found that elevated salinity and DOC enrichment induced by typhoons may accelerate the release of C but have little influence on N release from tidal freshwater wetland ecosystems. Additionally, under the combined elevated salinity and DOC enrichment, there is a higher demand for C and P relative to N in the wetland ecosystem.

Summary: The study found that bacterial diversity in the 0-20 cm soil depth of Lalu Wetland was significantly negatively related to pH, while fungal diversity was positively related to pH. Soil ammonium content was positively correlated with bacterial diversity at the 20-40 cm soil layer. Bacterial community structure was most significantly related to soil organic carbon, while fungal diversity and community structure were significantly related to soil organic carbon, available phosphorus, and available potassium.

Differences in the temperature dependence of wetland CO2 and CH4 emissions vary with water table depth

Hongyang Chen et al.

Summary: Global wetland CH4 emissions are more sensitive to temperature changes than CO2 emissions, with water table depth affecting the temperature dependence of CH4 emissions but not CO2 emissions. Climate change may lead to increased CH4 emissions from wetlands compared to CO2 emissions, as CH4 emissions appear to be more sensitive to temperature.

Success of coastal wetlands restoration is driven by sediment availability

Zezheng Liu et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands restored by Nature-based Solutions can trap more sediments than natural ones, and their efficiency is mainly determined by sediment supply, according to a meta-analysis of studies globally. The effectiveness of these restoration projects is primarily driven by sediment availability, not by wetland elevation, tidal range, local rates of sea-level rise, and significant wave height. Nature-based Solutions can mitigate coastal wetland vulnerability to sea-level rise, but are effective only in coastal locations where abundant sediment supply is available.
