Sources and pollution path identification of PAHs in karst aquifers: an example from Liulin karst water system, northern China

Xiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in karst water in the Liulin karst water system of northern China, revealing that the main sources are local combustion of fuels and surface runoff. The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in karst water gradually increased along the flow path, with the highest concentrations observed in coal mining and discharge areas. The study suggests a new technical method for tracing the sources and pollution paths of organic pollution in karst water systems.

Preferential flow under high-intensity short-duration irrigation events in soil columns from a karst and nonkarst landscape

Sheela Katuwal et al.

Summary: Preferential flow through soil macropores plays a significant role in the rapid transport of contaminants. This study found that soil with a higher fraction of coarse fragments, specifically karst-derived stony soils, drained significantly more water and Br- compared to nonkarst-derived soil. This indicates that soils with a high fraction of coarse fragments are more susceptible to leaching losses.
