Quantifying Groundwater Recharge Dynamics and Unsaturated Zone Processes in Snow-Dominated Catchments via On-Site Dissolved Gas Analysis

O. S. Schilling et al.

Summary: Snowmelt contributes significantly to groundwater recharge in snow-dominated regions. A new tracer method based on dissolved gases offers consistent estimates of snowmelt recharge dynamics, unlike stable water isotopes which can be biased due to variations in snow isotopes and difficulty measuring snowmelt directly. This method also provides insights into biological N-fixation pathways in boreal forest soils.

Winter Inputs Buffer Streamflow Sensitivity to Snowpack Losses in the Salt River Watershed in the Lower Colorado River Basin

Marcos D. Robles et al.

Summary: Recent research in the Upper Colorado River Basin suggests that despite warming temperatures and reduced snowfall, consistent streamflow declines have not been observed due to increased winter runoff. A study on nine gaged basins of the Salt River and its tributaries found that annual and seasonal streamflow patterns remained stable despite significant temperature increases from 1968-2011, with winter inputs playing a crucial role in streamflow production. Atmospheric rivers were identified as a key contributor to large winter streamflow peaks.

Sensitivity analysis of hydrological processes to perturbed climate in a southern boreal forest basin

Zhihua He et al.

Summary: The study utilized a CRHM model to simulate hydrological processes in a boreal forest basin, showing different sensitivities of basin hydrology to perturbations of precipitation (P) and air temperature (T). The results indicated that changes in T had a more significant impact on annual runoff volume and runoff coefficient compared to changes in P, while annual evapotranspiration increased rapidly with rising temperatures.

Responses of soil erosion to warming and wetting in a cold Canadian agricultural catchment

Okan Aygun et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential impacts of climate change on soil erosion in an agricultural catchment in eastern Canada. The Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) and a hydrological model were used to calculate sediment yields and assess climate sensitivity. Results suggest that conservation and no-till practices could significantly reduce annual sediment yields.

Hydrological response to warm and dry weather: do glaciers compensate?

Marit Van Tiel et al.

Summary: The study found that in warm and dry summer days, glaciers have a varied compensating effect on streamflow, especially in catchments with different glacier coverages. Additionally, it was observed that glacier meltwater remains an important contributor to streamflow in late summer under certain conditions.
