Evaluation of the impacts of human activities on propagation from meteorological drought to hydrological drought in the Weihe River Basin, China

Te Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impacts of human activities on the propagation of meteorological drought to hydrological drought using an effective framework. The results show that human activities significantly disturb hydrological drought variations and propagation characteristics. The thresholds for triggering different levels of hydrological drought generally become larger with changing rates, but smaller in spring and winter. The study provides important insights for drought preparedness and adaptation strategies.

Comparison between canonical vine copulas and a meta-Gaussian model for forecasting agricultural drought over China

Haijiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study developed a three-dimensional agricultural drought forecasting model based on canonical vine copulas, which showed good predictive ability for forecasting agricultural drought in August. The 3C-vine model outperformed the reference MG model and effectively captured extreme agricultural drought. This study has important implications for drought early warning, mitigation, and water resource scheduling.

Drought area, intensity and frequency changes in China under climate warming, 1961-2014

Lanying Han et al.

Summary: Rising global temperatures and decreased precipitation frequency have made drought a major natural disaster worldwide, particularly threatening China's food security. Research shows that the impact area, severity, and frequency of drought in China have been increasing with climate warming, with drought intensifying in the north and severe drought increasing more in the south.

Joint probability of drought encounter among three major grain production zones of China under nonstationary climate

Ruxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study identified the factors influencing drought risk in China's main grain production zones and characterized the joint probability distribution, showing that North China Plain and Sichuan Basin are more prone to different degrees of synchronous droughts. The probability of simultaneous droughts in the three major production zones decreases with increasing drought severity. When two regions experience specific droughts, the highest drought probability is in the North China Plain.

Insight from CMIP6 SSP-RCP scenarios for future drought characteristics in China

Buda Su et al.

Summary: This study analyzes future drought characteristics over China using four climate models from CMIP6 under seven different scenarios, compared with CMIP5 models to highlight improvements in drought identification. The results show that CMIP6 has a robust capability in capturing historical drought characteristics, with projections of continuous drought in certain regions in the future, and an increase in drought frequency and intensity with higher emissions. The reduced biases in drought characteristics in CMIP6 models are likely associated with improvements in representing physical processes, providing valuable information for drought adaptation measures in China.

CMIP6 projects less frequent seasonal soil moisture droughts over China in response to different warming levels

Sisi Chen et al.

Summary: Seasonal drought occurrences are projected to increase across different regions over China under global warming, with CMIP6 models showing less frequent droughts compared to CMIP5 models. Model selection is critical for future drought projection, as the future increase in China drought frequency varies depending on the selected climate models. Additionally, as the climate warms, drought frequency will increase while drought duration will decrease, leading to more frequent but shorter drought events in the future.

A new complexity-based three-stage method to comprehensively quantify positive/negative contribution rates of climate change and human activities to changes in runoff in the upper Yellow River

Xianbao Su et al.

Summary: The study aims to quantify the contribution rates of CCHAs to changes in runoff in the URYR using a new method, TSM. The results show that climate change is the dominant factor affecting runoff changes, with human activities having differing impacts in different sub-regions. The TSM method shows good performance in effectively calculating the contribution rates of CCHAs to runoff changes in the URYR and other watersheds.

Spatio-temporal variations of dryness/wetness over Northwest China under different SSPs-RCPs

Jiancheng Qin et al.

Summary: In the context of climate warming, Northwest China is projected to experience increases in temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration, but with varying trends of dryness/wetness. While annual mean values of temperature, precipitation, and PET are expected to rise, there will be an increasing trend of drought, particularly under higher radiative forcing scenarios. This suggests that stakeholders need to prepare for more severe drought conditions in the region in the coming decades.

Xiaobo Yun et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of reservoir regulation for changing hydrological extremes in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin in the 21st century. It found that reservoir regulation can mitigate basin-wide dry and wet hydrological extremes, although the lack of reservoir storage capacity presents a challenge for managing wet hydrological extremes in the basin in the future.
