Using X-ray computed tomography to quantify variability in soil macropore characteristics in pastures

Suman Budhathoki et al.

Summary: This study characterized soil pore structure (>0.75 mm diameter) at different slope positions within a 0.40 ha pasture field using X-ray computed tomography (CT) and image analysis. The results revealed variations in macropore number and macroporosity values among different slope positions, indicating the relevance of topographical variation in influencing soil macropore characteristics.

Mechanisms of grazing management impact on preferential water flow an infiltration patterns in a semi-arid grassland in northern China

Xiaolong Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the soil and plant properties of grazing exclusion, cold-season grazing, and free-grazing grassland in Inner Mongolia, and examined the effect of different grazing management practices on water infiltration and preferential flow behavior. The results showed that grazing exclusion enhanced plant density, root biomass, and preferential water infiltration, making it an effective method for preventing grassland degradation.

The processes of preferential flow in the unsaturated zone

John R. Nimmo

Summary: Preferential flow, including modes such as funneled flow, fingered flow, and macropore flow, is a major influence in unsaturated soil and rock. Macropore flow, the most recognized mode, poses unanswered questions and major difficulties, requiring further research into its complexities and implications.

A meta-analysis on effects of root development on soil hydraulic properties

Xiaoqing Shi et al.

Summary: Root development significantly increases soil infiltration rates and saturated hydraulic conductivity, with root length density having a low correlation and non-capillary porosity showing a moderate correlation with infiltration rates. Soil infiltration rates and K-sat gradually increase with plant age, and root systems exert the most pronounced effect on infiltration rates in spring and summer. Future experimental research should focus on the effects of root systems under specific conditions, and datasets based on observations recorded under multiple conditions should be compiled to establish general patterns in the corresponding relationships.

Effects of hillslope position on soil water infiltration and preferential flow in tropical forest in southwest China

Chunfeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that soil physical properties decreased with elevation from the hilltop to the valley bottom, while water infiltration capacity showed the opposite trend. Preferential flow had a greater impact on soil water movement in upper locations compared to the valley bottom. Soil infiltration capacity parameters and preferential flow were significantly correlated with soil properties like water content, porosity, root biomass, and termite holes.

Effect of soil characteristics on preferential flow of Phragmites australis community in Yellow River delta

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: Wetland ecosystems play a vital role in the global ecosystem due to their natural resources and ecological functions. Preferential flow, a common form of water and solute transport in soils, has significant effects on nutrient transport and environmental pollution. This study identified two types of preferential flow in a wetland ecosystem through dye tracing experiments and found a strong correlation between soil water content and preferential flow intensity data. This research aims to provide guidance and foundational data for future studies on preferential flow in wetlands.
