Landscape Genomics to Enable Conservation Actions: The California Conservation Genomics Project

H. Bradley Shaffer et al.

Summary: The California Conservation Genomics Project is an important initiative that aims to use comprehensive landscape genetic data for modernizing natural resource management. The project will generate, analyze, and curate high-quality reference genomes and resequenced genomes for multiple species, providing valuable insights into genomic diversity, corridors connecting hotspots, regions requiring genetic rescue, and variations critical for climate adaptation. The project has received full funding and involves collaboration with various institutions to complete data collection and analysis.

Reference Genome of the Northwestern Pond Turtle, Actinemys marmorata

Brian D. Todd et al.

Summary: This article presents a new chromosome-level assembly of the genome of the northwestern pond turtle, Actinemys marmorata, and discusses its potential applications in studying genetic diversity, adaptations, and hybridization dynamics with its sister species, the southwestern pond turtle. The assembly is the most complete among the currently available genomes of 24 turtle species, and it will contribute to the California Conservation Genomics Project.

Towards complete and error-free genome assemblies of all vertebrate species

Arang Rhie et al.

Summary: The Vertebrate Genome Project and the international Genome 10K consortium have collaborated to generate high-quality genome assemblies for 16 species representing six major vertebrate lineages, leading to new biological discoveries. Long-read sequencing technologies are essential for maximizing genome quality, and addressing complex repeats and haplotype heterozygosity are crucial for reducing assembly errors and improving completeness of reference genomes. The lessons learned from this project have paved the way for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP), an international effort to generate high-quality, complete reference genomes for all known vertebrate species.
