Assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seafood collected from coastal aquaculture ponds in Taiwan and human health risk assessment

Yun-Ru Ju et al.

Summary: The levels and distribution of 16 USEPA PAHs in aquaculture farmed fish and shellfish in Taiwan were determined, with results indicating low cancer and non-cancer risks for consumers. Shellfish had higher total PAH concentrations compared to fish, with a predominance of low-molecular-weight PAHs. The seafood studied was deemed safe for consumption, but ongoing monitoring and control of PAH concentrations are needed, particularly for children and seniors.

Bioaccumulation and toxic potencies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in freshwater biota from the Ogbese River, Nigeria

Isaac Ayodele Ololade et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fish and shellfish samples collected from the Ogbese River in Nigeria, finding that fish had higher concentrations of PAHs compared to shellfish, with bottom dwellers showing more significant accumulation. The findings suggest the need for urgent remediation of the river to safeguard public health.

Seasonal distribution pattern and bioaccumulation of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in four bioindicator coastal fishes of Argentina*

Tatiana Recabarren-Villalon et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a global concern in coastal environments due to their wide range of biological toxicity and ability to bioaccumulate. This study evaluated seasonal distribution patterns of PAHs in sediments and four fish species in an impacted Argentine estuary, finding the highest PAH levels in fall and different patterns in colder and warmer seasons. The data suggested that wastewater discharges are the main source of PAHs, and certain fish species are sensitive bioindicators of chronic contamination.

Antibiotics in mariculture organisms of different growth stages: Tissue-specific bioaccumulation and influencing factors

Xuanrui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tissue-specific bioaccumulation characteristics of 19 antibiotics in maricultured organisms at different growth stages, revealing that the bioaccumulation capacity varies among organisms at different stages. Tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones were found to be the dominant antibiotics, with the total concentrations higher in fish compared to shrimp and sea cucumber.

Remediation of soils and sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To immobilize, mobilize, or degrade?

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: PAHs are generated due to incomplete burning of organic substances, primarily influenced by the use of fossil fuels. They impose health impacts on humans and other living organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. Their high hydrophobicity and low water solubility influence their adsorption onto soils and sediments, affecting their bioavailability and subsequent degradation.

Antibiotics in cultured freshwater products in Eastern China: Occurrence, human health risks, sources, and bioaccumulation potential

Juan-Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study assessed the occurrence of antibiotics in cultured freshwater products in Eastern China, finding that antibiotic levels were lower than in other studies with limited adverse effects on human health, though fluoroquinolone antibiotics posed potential risks. Bioaccumulation potential varied in different years, with generally low bioavailability from surface sediments in pond environments.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments and fish species from the White Nile, East Africa: Bioaccumulation potential, source apportionment, ecological and health risk assessment

Juma John Moses Abayi et al.

Summary: The study found high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and fish from the White Nile near Melut oil fields in South Sudan, with a significant impact on Clarias gariepinus. Bioaccumulation of PAHs in fish was mainly influenced by low molecular weight PAHs, and the predominant source of PAHs in the White Nile environment was petrogenic.
