A novel self-floating cyclodextrin-modified polymer for cationic dye removal: Preparation, adsorption behavior and mechanism

Zijie Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel composite based on CD was fabricated and successfully applied to treat cationic dye pollutants. The characterized composite showed high porosity, good thermal stability, stable crystal structure, and abundant functional groups, leading to excellent adsorption capacity. The removal efficiency of the composite for malachite green remained above 95% at pH 1 ~ 10. The composite reached equilibrium rapidly and exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1390.263 mg/g. Electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding were responsible for the binding between the composite and the cationic dye. Moreover, the composite showed good regeneration capability, with a removal efficiency still above 80% after five successive cycles. Therefore, the composite has great potential as an alternative adsorbent for cationic dye removal.
