Persistent free radicals in biochar enhance superoxide-mediated Fe(III)/Fe (II) cycling and the efficacy of CaO2 Fenton-like treatment

Shuqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient Fenton-like system using CaO2/BC composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, enhancing Fe(II) regeneration and SMX degradation. The system showed higher efficiency in utilizing O-2(center dot-) for Fe(II) regeneration and enhancing SMX degradation. Positive correlation was found between SMX degradation rates and EPR signal intensities of biochar-derived persistent free radicals in CaO2/BC.

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of atrazine with Mn-loaded and Fe-loaded biochar

Shi-Qi Tian et al.

Summary: Biochar loaded with manganese and iron showed excellent catalytic ozonation activity, effectively removing atrazine with hydroxyl radicals as the main oxidant. The enhanced adsorption and decomposition of O-3 on the loaded biochar led to improved degradation pathways of atrazine, reducing toxicity of oxidation products significantly. This research indicates the great potential of Mn-loaded and Fe-loaded biochar for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation in water pollution treatment.

Efficient Fenton-like treatment of high-concentration chlorophenol wastewater catalysed by Cu-Doped SBA-15 mesoporous silica

Huanting Hu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Cu-doped SBA-15 with a Cu/Si molar ratio of 0.133 exhibited the best catalytic activity in the oxidative degradation of high-concentration chlorophenols, with an apparent reaction rate constant of 0.170 min(-1) for 4-chlorophenol. After 300 minutes of reaction, the total organic carbon content in the solution decreased to 23.8%. The results suggest the potential of Cu-doped SBA-15 for effective treatment of industrial wastewater containing high levels of chlorophenols.
