The relative contributions of root uptake and remobilization to the loading of Cd and As into rice grains: Implications in simultaneously controlling grain Cd and As accumulation using a segmented water management strategy*

Bo-Yang Huang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that different water management regimes have significant effects on the solubility of Cd and As in soil and their subsequent accumulation in rice grain. Water management applied at different growth periods has different impacts, with grain filling period having a greater influence on grain Cd concentration, while vegetative growth stage water treatment affects As concentration more. Additionally, the findings suggest that grain Cd accumulation is mainly from root uptake during grain filling, while grain As is mostly remobilized from within the plant prior to grain filling.

Elicitation of (E)-2-Hexenal and 2,3-Butanediol on the Bioactive Compounds in Adventitious Roots of Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus

Haifeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding (E)-2-hexenal and 2,3-butanediol into the medium on bioactive metabolites in Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus adventitious root cultures. The results showed that the combination of 2,3-butanediol and (E)-2-hexenal promoted the accumulation of astragaloside IV, while their individual application delayed it. The production of CG and ononin was not significantly affected, but their accumulation patterns were changed. This finding provides important insights into the production of bioactive products in herbal plants.

Goethite modified biochar simultaneously mitigates the arsenic and cadmium accumulation in paddy rice (Oryza sativa) L

Muhammad Kashif Irshad et al.

Summary: This study found that the application of goethite-modified biochar (GB) significantly reduced the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in rice plants. GB amendment decreased the bioavailability of Cd and As in the soil, increased Fe-plaque formation on root surfaces, and altered the microbial community in the rice rhizosphere. The use of GB effectively improved the quality of rice grains and provided a valuable method to protect public health by mitigating the co-occurrence of Cd and As in paddy soils.
