Shifts of bacterial community and molecular ecological network in activated sludge system under ibuprofen stress

Shidi Liu et al.

Summary: The long-term effects of ibuprofen on nutrient removal, community compositions, and microbial interactions in the activated sludge system were explored in this study. Ibuprofen did not inhibit the removal of organic matters and nutrients, but significantly reduced microbial diversity and changed the bacterial community structure. Different phylogenetic populations had different responses to ibuprofen, with some increasing and others decreasing under ibuprofen stress. The study also found that ibuprofen reduced the overall network size and links, but led to a closer network with more efficient communication among microbes.

Effects of long-term exposure to low-concentration PS-NPs on anammox granular sludge: Resistance and inhibition depend on PS-NP accumulation

Shanshan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term exposure to low-concentration polystyrene nanoplastics on anammox granular sludge. The results showed that such exposure led to a decrease in nitrogen removal performance and granule stability. Additionally, the oxidative stress level of cells increased, leading to sludge cracking and reduced strength, as well as inhibiting the growth of certain bacterial strains. This research is crucial for assessing the potential risk of long-term PS-NP exposure and maintaining high nitrogen removal performance and stability.

Successional Dynamics of Molecular Ecological Network of Anammox Microbial Communities under Elevated Salinity

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: The study found that high salinity inhibits the performance of anammox, but under low salinity conditions, microbial networks become closer and more complex, serving as a survival strategy. Microbial taxa such as Planctomycetes and Candidatus Kuenenia show increased competitive relationships under 30 g/L NaCl, which may contribute to the deterioration of nitrogen removal. However, the microbial community network tends to gradually adapt to elevated salinity, indicating a potential for resilience.

Influence of biodegradable polybutylene succinate and non-biodegradable polyvinyl chloride microplastics on anammox sludge: Performance evaluation, suppression effect and metagenomic analysis

Linqin Tang et al.

Summary: Research has found that PBS and PVC microplastics reduce the nitrite removal efficiency of anammox sludge, while PBS MPs have a positive effect on the polysaccharide content in the sludge. In addition, non-biodegradable PVC MPs are more harmful to anammox sludge and warrant attention.

Relative importance of aqueous leachate versus particle ingestion as uptake routes for microplastic additives (hexabromocyclododecane) to mussels

Mi Jang et al.

Summary: This study compared two bioaccumulation pathways of the additive HBCD and found that uptake through the aqueous phase is a more significant pathway for bioaccumulation of HBCD from EPS to mussels compared to particle ingestion. The measured HBCD levels in EPS, leachate, and exposed mussels are environmentally relevant concentrations, highlighting the need for further investigation into the fate and effects of chemical additives leached from plastic debris.

Small microplastics (<100 μm), plasticizers and additives in seawater and sediments: Oleo-extraction, purification, quantification, and polymer characterization using Micro-FTIR

Fabiana Corami et al.

Summary: By investigating the abundance and distribution of small microplastics and other micro-litter components in sediments and seawater of a transitional environment, this study found that SMPs were more abundant in sediments compared to seawater. Additives and plasticizers present in the environment can serve as a good proxy for the presence of polymers.

Dibutyl phthalate release from polyvinyl chloride microplastics: Influence of plastic properties and environmental factors

Yuanyuan Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching behavior of phthalate plasticizer from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics and found that plastic properties had a significant impact on the release of plasticizer, while environmental factors had a minor influence. Fulvic acid was found to greatly promote phthalate release, suggesting that it can enhance phthalate solubility and solution-plastic affinity. Additionally, the coexistence of fulvic acid and NaCl resulted in more phthalate leaching, indicating a potential role of other fulvic acid-like additives in the leaching process.

Effects of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen removal and molecular ecological network in integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland

Shaoyon Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to SMX significantly increased nitrate removal rates in IVCWs, while ammonia nitrogen removal rates were not significantly affected. The presence of SMX led to a decrease in bacterial richness and alterations in bacterial community structures, especially those of nitrogen-transforming microorganisms. The molecular ecological network analysis revealed that SMX had positive effects on denitrifying bacteria interactions but reduced the complexity of the microbial network as a whole.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.
