Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based wastewater treatment - unexpected nitration side reactions-a serious environmental issue: A review

Manoj P. Rayaroth et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the formation of nitro-products in wastewater treatment processes and compares the mechanisms of various AOPs. Increased attention should be given to monitoring and minimizing the formation of nitro-products during oxidative degradation processes.

Influence of water matrix on the degradation of organic micropollutants by ozone based processes: A review on oxidant scavenging mechanism

Anam Asghar et al.

Summary: The prevalence of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment has led to efforts in retrofitting existing wastewater treatment plants. However, the degradation of these pollutants through ozone-based processes faces challenges due to the presence of matrix compounds and variations in pH. Further research on the matrix effects is crucial to understand the degradation of organic micropollutants.

Can the commonly used quenching method really evaluate the role of reactive oxygen species in pollutant abatement during catalytic ozonation?

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: The commonly used quenching method may not be suitable for investigating the role of ROS in pollutant abatement during catalytic ozonation, as the quenchers can interfere with the reaction mechanism.

Ozonation of cytostatic drugs in aqueous phase

L. Alicia Garcia-Costa et al.

Summary: This study successfully removed five cytostatics of concern from Portuguese WWTP effluents using non-catalytic ozonation. CAP and MPA were quickly eliminated while BICA, CYC, and IFO required breakdown via hydroxyl radicals generation for degradation. Increasing ozone dosage improved removal efficiency, with CAP, MPA, and IFO completely eliminated after 180 minutes.

Evaluation of the concentration and contribution of superoxide radical for micropollutant abatement during ozonation

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: During ozonation, the concentrations ratios of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and ozone remain constant, indicating the potential non-negligible role of superoxide radicals in the degradation of certain micropollutants with similar or higher reactivity compared to hydroxyl radicals. The proposed chemical kinetic model accurately simulates the abatement efficiencies of ozone-resistant micropollutants by considering the contribution of superoxide radicals, providing a valuable tool for predicting micropollutant removal during ozonation.

Multi-Matrix Approach for the Analysis of Bicalutamide Residues in Oncology Centers by HPLC-FLD

M. Francisca Portilha-Cunha et al.

Summary: Cytostatics, such as bicalutamide, pose a risk to healthcare workers and aquatic ecosystems due to their toxic nature. A simple high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the rapid screening of bicalutamide in hospital effluents and indoor surfaces, showing good linearity and low detection limits. Although bicalutamide was not detected in grab samples from a Portuguese hospital, further sampling is needed to fully assess its occurrence and exposure risks.

Ozone-based water treatment (O3, O3/UV, O3/H2O2) for removal of organic micropollutants, bacteria inactivation and regrowth prevention

Ana M. Gorito et al.

Summary: Ozone-based water treatments proved to be effective in simultaneously removing organic micropollutants and bacteria from surface water samples. Single ozonation was found to be the best treatment solution with removal efficiencies higher than 85% for most OMPs, as well as achieving microbial inactivation to levels below permissible levels for drinking water.

Oxidation processes for cytostatic drugs elimination in aqueous phase: A critical review

Alicia L. Garcia-Costa et al.

Summary: Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases, and the increasing use of cytostatic drugs in chemotherapy has led to the presence of these compounds in natural water bodies, necessitating research on their elimination. This review compiles information on various oxidation processes for cytostatics' degradation, discussing efficiency, operating conditions, transformation byproducts, and toxicity. Recommendations for future work in this area are also outlined.
