Testing the performance of ice thickness models to estimate the formation of potential future glacial lakes in Austria

Jan-Christoph Otto et al.

Summary: The study simulated the subglacial topography in the Austrian Alps and found that the current models overestimate the number and location of potential future glacial lakes, especially in valley type glaciers. The research suggests that the modeling approach performs better on large valley type glaciers and less accurately on mountain glaciers. The results indicate that up to 42 new lakes may form within 23 glaciers in Austria.

Results from the Ice Thickness Models Intercomparison eXperiment Phase 2 (ITMIX2)

Daniel Farinotti et al.

Summary: The analysis showed high variability in local thickness calculations among models, with typical deviations of 16% of mean glacier thickness for unmeasured locations. Limited ice thickness observations were effective in constraining mean glacier thickness, demonstrating the value of even partial surveys. The response to the availability of ice thickness observations varied across models, with an average increase in deviation between modeled and observed thickness by 8.5% of mean ice thickness for every tenfold increase in distance to the closest observation.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Surface Mass-Balance Gradients From Elevation and Ice Flux Data in the Columbia Basin, Canada

Ben M. Pelto et al.

Summary: Estimating annual surface mass balance between flux-gates using the continuity equation is viable, with relatively small average mean error, but large mean absolute error and average modeled mass-balance uncertainty. The method yields comparable gradients to direct measurements, but caution is needed when interpreting individual flux-bin mass balances due to large residuals.

ERA5-Land: a state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset for land applications

Joaquin Munoz-Sabater et al.

Summary: ERA5-Land is a global dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts within the Copernicus Climate Change Service, covering the period from 1950 to the present. It provides enhanced resolution and consistency in describing the evolution of the water and energy cycles, with added value in hydrological and energy cycle analysis.

Glacier Cover Change Assessment of the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Canada (1985-2018)

Adjoa Intsiful et al.

Summary: This study utilizes Landsat images to measure spatial and temporal changes in Canada's Columbia Icefield glaciers, revealing a reduction of approximately 18% in glacier coverage since 1985. All glaciers in the study region experienced retreat and decreased in area over the observation period.
