Endocrine and psychosocial moderators of mindfulness-based stress reduction for the prevention of perimenopausal depressive symptoms: A randomized controlled trial*

Jennifer L. Gordon et al.

Summary: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) appears to be an effective intervention for reducing depressive symptoms among perimenopausal women, as it led to lower levels of depressive symptoms, perceived stress, anxiety, increased resilience, and improved sleep quality. Baseline characteristics such as history of major depression, recent stressful life events, menopause transition stage, and emotional sensitivity to reproductive hormone fluctuation may moderate the treatment effects.

Summary: Many Gulf War Veterans have been suffering from Gulf War Illness (GWI) since 1991, with treatments including cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, and mindfulness-based interventions showing effectiveness in improving symptoms. However, doxycycline was found to be ineffective and associated with harms for GWI. Larger, more rigorous studies are needed to confirm treatment benefits and guide clinicians.
