Bioactive Constituents and Toxicological Evaluation of Selected Antidiabetic Medicinal Plants of Saudi Arabia

Summary: The purpose of this review is to summarize the available antidiabetic medicinal plants in Saudi Arabia, including their phytoconstituents and toxicological findings. A total of 50 plant species belonging to 27 families were found in Saudi Arabia, with Lamiaceae and Moraceae being the most dominant families. The common bioactive constituents of these plants include beta-Amyrin, beta-sitosterol, and oleanolic acid. These plants have shown hypoglycemic effects and further pharmacological research is recommended, along with investigation of the side effects of the active ingredients.

Summary: The usage of herbal remedy is increasing worldwide, but the contamination of heavy metals poses a serious problem for medicinal plants. This study evaluated the phytochemicals, biological activities, and heavy metal levels in Reseda muricata and Marrubium vulgare grown in different parts of Saudi Arabia. The results showed the presence of various active compounds and assessed their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and brine sharp lethal toxicity properties.

This study demonstrated significant antioxidant and analgesic activities in extracts from different parts of the plant. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of various active compounds, suggesting the potential development of novel analgesics from this plant.
