Discrete Boltzmann modeling of plasma shock wave

Zhipeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the physical structure of ion shock waves in plasma and the non-equilibrium effects around the shock front were investigated. It was found that the non-equilibrium effects become stronger with increasing Mach number, and the charge distribution of ions deviates from neutrality in the upstream and downstream of the shock wave. The characteristics of thermodynamic non-equilibrium can be used to differentiate plasma shock waves from detonation waves.

Nonequilibrium effects of reactive flow based on gas kinetic theory*

Xianli Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates accurate probing of chemically reactive flows with essential thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects. It is found that the distribution function depends on physical quantities and derivatives, but not on chemical reactions. Simulation results show the deviation between equilibrium and nonequilibrium distribution functions, and it is verified that the calculated kinetic moments using discrete distribution functions are close to those calculated using integrals.

Effects of the initial perturbations on the Rayleigh-Taylor-Kelvin-Helmholtz instability system

Feng Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of initial perturbations on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI), Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI), and the coupled Rayleigh-Taylor-Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (RTKHI) systems are investigated. It is found that the initial perturbation significantly influences the evolution of RTI, while the influence on KHI can be ignored. The study on RTKHI focuses on the main mechanism in the early stage and the transition point from KHI-like to RTI-like behavior. The shape of the initial interface and the inverted parabolic and inverted ellipse disturbances have a major impact on the RTKHI system.

A Lattice-Boltzmann study of premixed flames thermo-acoustic instabilities

Karthik Bhairapurada et al.

Summary: This study presents possibly the first use of lattice-Boltzmann numerical simulations to investigate thermo-acoustic instabilities of premixed flames. The study examines the interaction between flames and an imposed acoustic field, observing the effects of parametric instability on flames and the influence of the acoustic forcing on plane flames. It also explores self-induced thermo-acoustic oscillations of flames propagating in narrow channels, revealing an unexpected dependency on channel width. The results confirm the capability of the lattice-Boltzmann method to capture the complex coupling between flame dynamics and acoustics.

Role of wall temperature on cavitation bubble collapse near a wall investigated using thermal lattice Boltzmann method

Yu Yang et al.

Summary: The thermal lattice Boltzmann method is used to simulate cavitation bubble collapse in heating or cooling systems. The results are consistent with Laplace's law and temperature solutions derived from the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. The effects of wall temperature on a collapsing bubble are studied, and the influence mechanism of the micro-jet and the cavitation bubble itself on solid-wall heat transfer, as well as the thermodynamic behavior characteristics of the cavitation bubble collapse near the wall, are obtained. The study also introduces a dimensionless temperature parameter to analyze the heat transfer intensity of the model.

Study of shock wave/boundary layer interaction from the perspective of nonequilibrium effects

Yue Bao et al.

Summary: Shock wave/boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) is extensively studied in supersonic flows, and this paper investigates SWBLI from the perspective of nonequilibrium effects. The results show that the nonequilibrium effects are stronger in the boundary layer compared to the incident shock wave in a Mach 2 incoming flow. However, for a Mach 6 incoming flow, the nonequilibrium effects of the incident shock wave are stronger and have an obvious interaction with the nonequilibrium effect in the boundary layer. The study also discusses the relation between nonequilibrium effects and energy conversion in the boundary layer.

Non-equilibrium characteristics of mass and heat transfers in the slip flow

Yudong Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the non-equilibrium characteristics of slip flow and proposes two categories of thermodynamic non-equilibrium flows with different origins. The non-equilibrium characteristics of mass and heat transfers in slip flow are studied based on the Discrete Boltzmann Modeling (DBM) method, and the reliability of the method is verified. It is found that the traditional linear constitutive relations are no longer applicable near the wall in the slip flow regime. For the Knudsen layer problem, a hyperbolic sinusoidal distribution is approximated for the heat flux and viscous stress components.

Free-Energy-Based Discrete Unified Gas Kinetic Scheme for van der Waals Fluid

Zeren Yang et al.

Summary: The multiphase model based on free-energy theory has been prosperous due to its solid foundation and succinct implementation. This study introduced the classical lattice Boltzmann free-energy model into the discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS) to identify the main hindrance to its development. The results showed that force imbalance amplified by reconstruction errors prevented the direct application of the free-energy model to the DUGKS. However, coupling the well-balanced free-energy model with the DUGKS successfully removed the influences of force imbalance and demonstrated consistent performance.

Droplet evaporation in finite-size systems: Theoretical analysis and mesoscopic modeling

Summary: In this work, a revised theoretical analysis of single droplet evaporation is presented for finite-size open systems, taking into consideration 2D and 3D cases. The classical D2-Law is found to be applicable only for 3D large systems, while deviations occur for small and/or 2D systems. Theoretical solutions for the temperature field are derived, and numerical simulations using the lattice Boltzmann method are performed, achieving remarkable agreement with the theoretical solution.

On derivation and verification of a kinetic model for quantum vibrational energy of polyatomic gases in the gas-kinetic unified algorithm

Jun-Lin Wu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a kinetic Boltzmann model equation involving internal degrees of freedom is constructed for thermodynamic non-equilibrium polyatomic gases, analyzing the quantum effect and important properties of the model. Through the moment method, balance equations on each vibrational energy level and macroscopic variables are derived, along with the thermodynamic relationship in the hydrodynamic limit using the Chapman-Enskog method. Numerical methods and wall surface boundary condition are presented for solving the model equation, and the model is tested through numerical simulations of planar flows past a cylinder with different Mach numbers to analyze the influence of quantum vibrational energy.

Immiscible Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence using mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann algorithms

H. S. Tavares et al.

Summary: The study investigated the turbulence induced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability in 2D immiscible two-component flows, comparing the results with 3D turbulence. Both miscible and immiscible cases exhibited similar growth patterns in mixing layer and velocity, with differences in initial transients. Enstrophy in the immiscible case showed a tendency to grow proportionally to t(3/2) with higher vorticity values near the interface, while the behavior of typical drop size and total interface length followed a power-law pattern. This study also validated the application of lattice Boltzmann tool for 3D immiscible cases.

Summary: The study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a two-sided collapsible channel flow using an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method, exploring chaotic behaviors and self-excited oscillations. The system exhibits a supercritical Hopf bifurcation leading to a period-1 limit cycle oscillation, and chaos can be reached through period-doubling and quasi-periodic bifurcations. It incorporates short-range molecular interaction by recovering an equation of state for dense gases, and it mimics long-range molecular interaction by introducing a pairwise interaction force. The model uses double distribution functions for mass and momentum conservation laws and an innovative total kinetic energy distribution function for energy conservation law, ensuring full consistency with kinetic theory and natural thermodynamic consistency.
