It takes time to heal a broken heart: ventricular plasticity improves heart performance after myocardial infarction in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Lucas A. Zena et al.

Summary: The study found that acute coronary artery occlusion in juvenile rainbow trout led to elevated heart rate, decreased variability, and reduced heart rate scope, while long-term occlusion resulted in normalization of these parameters. Additionally, a fibrous collagen layer formed after long-term occlusion, potentially contributing to ventricular integrity or indicating oxygen supply to specific regions of the myocardium. This demonstrates the plastic ventricular remodeling capacity of rainbow trout in response to coronary artery obstruction, which helps restore cardiac function and myocardium oxygenation.

Open access tool and microfluidic devices for phenotypic quantification of heart function of intact fruit fly and zebrafish larvae

Alireza Zabihihesari et al.

Summary: This study quantified the heartbeat parameters of small model organisms, fruit fly and zebrafish, in-vivo using microfluidics and a novel MATLAB-based software. The software automatically detected heartbeats, extracted heartbeat signals, and removed noise, enabling quantification of various heart parameters in intact larvae. This method provides a new approach for research in cardiac physiology of model organisms.

Spectral phenotyping of embryonic development reveals integrative thermodynamic responses

Oliver Tills et al.

Summary: This study tested the biological significance of Energy Proxy Traits (EPTs) in the embryonic development of Radix balthica at different temperatures, finding that EPTs are thermally sensitive and enable effective high-dimensional treatment clustering throughout organismal development. Results suggest that EPTs can capture aspects predictive of biological outcomes, potentially reflecting levels of energy turnover within the phenotype.
