Effect of chlorine dioxide pre-oxidation on algal non-protein amino acid degradation and DBPs formation during subsequent chlor(am)ination

Yangtao Wu et al.

Summary: 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB), a neurotoxin produced by cyanobacteria, poses a significant threat to human health and serves as an important precursor to disinfection by-products (DBPs). ClO2 exhibited the highest oxidation efficiency for DAB among the four oxidants tested. Increasing the dosage of ClO2 not only improved DAB oxidation efficiency, but also reduced the formation of DBPs during post-chlorination. However, the formation of DBPs varied during post-chloramination.

Contribution to the use of wet sludge water treatment plant fine aggregate in Portland cement concretes: Evaluation of consistency, density, porosity, absorption, strength and tensile strength

Rubia Meert et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of sludge from water treatment plants as a substitute for natural sand in Portland cement concrete. The results showed that moderate use of sludge (up to 10% replacement) can be applied in civil construction without significantly affecting the physical and mechanical properties.

Efficacy of two natural tannins-based polymers in contrast to aluminum sulfate for drinking water production

Felipe Oliveira Schmitt et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using natural tannins-based polymers can effectively remove turbidity and color in water without increasing alkalinity, pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter content, achieving up to 90% turbidity removal and 86% color removal rates. This suggests that tannins-based polymers could potentially replace aluminum sulfate, contributing to high clarification efficiencies and safety for health and environment in water treatment processes.

Synthesising tannin-based coagulants for water and wastewater application: A review

Azreen Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Tannin, a natural water-soluble polyphenol present in most plant cells, is widely accepted and applied as a plant-based coagulant in water and wastewater treatment, effectively removing pollutants such as turbidity, colorants, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, algae, and heavy metals. The effectiveness of tannins as a coagulant is associated with their chemical structure and the degree of tannin modification, which are influenced by the plant source from which they are extracted.
