Effectiveness of industry-university-research cooperation in China: impact of innovation input and open innovation environment

Huosong Xia et al.

Summary: The research found that innovative talent input has an inverted U-shaped impact on the effectiveness of Industry-University-Research Cooperation (IURC). Increasing innovative funds invested could decrease the marginal effect of IURC. However, an open innovation environment can alleviate the positive marginal effect of talent input exceeding a certain value.

Convergence of energy carbon emission efficiency: evidence from manufacturing sub-sectors in China

Dongdong Liu

Summary: This paper studies the convergence trend of manufacturing energy carbon emission efficiency in China, and draws some important conclusions. Firstly, China's manufacturing energy carbon emissions and efficiency show an increasing trend, with coal being the main emission source. Secondly, the manufacturing energy carbon emission efficiency exhibits convergence, but has industry heterogeneity. Finally, by reducing emissions, adopting differentiated policies, adjusting industry scale, and improving technology intensity, the energy carbon emission efficiency of manufacturing can be improved to promote high-quality economic development.

Does trade in services improve carbon efficiency? -Analysis based on international panel data

Rui Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of trade in services on carbon efficiency, finding that trade in services significantly improves carbon efficiency, especially in exports, while imported services have an inhibitory effect. Furthermore, changes in national leadership, the financial crisis in 2008, and the signing of the Kyoto Protocol all had an impact on the promotional effect of trade in services on carbon efficiency.

Carbon Emission Efficiency and Low-Carbon Optimization in Shanxi Province under Dual Carbon Background

Xiaojia Guo et al.

Summary: Shanxi Province, an important energy base in China, heavily relies on coal resources for its economic development, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions and ecological problems. This paper utilized the SBM-DEA model and Malmquist index to assess the energy consumption and carbon emission efficiency of 11 prefecture-level cities in Shanxi from 2000 to 2020. The findings revealed variations in carbon emission efficiencies among the cities, with Taiyuan and Shuozhou exhibiting higher technical efficiency, technological progress, and total factor productivity compared to others. Although the carbon emission rate in Shanxi has slowed down, challenges such as a large total emission base, high carbon emission intensity, and low unit carbon emission efficiency persist. The industrial structure plays a vital role in hindering improvements in carbon emission efficiency. The study also observed a gradual dispersion and enhancement of carbon emission efficiency from the central and northern regions to the southern regions of Shanxi Province during the period. To attain a low-carbon economy, Shanxi Province needs to optimize its industrial structure, expedite research and development in low-carbon technologies, adjust its energy structure, and promote the establishment of an energy supply system centered around clean low-carbon energy sources.

Key areas and pathways for carbon emissions reduction in Beijing for the Dual Carbon targets

Ren Huang et al.

Summary: The article evaluates the key areas and pathways for carbon emissions reduction in Beijing from 2015 to 2060 using extended STIRPAT model and LEAP-Beijing model. It highlights that energy structure upgrading and energy efficiency improvement are crucial for the city's emissions reduction. Achieving the Dual-Carbon targets requires a low-carbon transition across all sectors, with prioritization on power, transportation, and commercial sectors.

Energy-saving R&D and carbon intensity in China

Junbing Huang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on energy-saving R&D in China, categorizing activities by participants and purposes to identify their heterogeneity. Findings suggest that enterprises have a more noticeable impact on reducing carbon intensity, utility-type R&D activities are more effective in cutting carbon intensity than invention-type R&D, and technology absorptive capacity plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of energy-saving R&D activities on carbon intensity.

Gravity model estimates of the spatial determinants of trade, migration, and trade-and-migration policies

Rebecca Freeman et al.

Summary: Using a gravity model, this study examines the impact of distance and borders on trade, migration, and related policies, revealing three key differences between trade and migration patterns. Regional trade (freedom-of-movement) agreements have varying effects on trade (migration) depending on the distance between the countries involved. Over time, the effects of distance on trade (migration) either decrease or remain unchanged, while the effects of international borders on trade (migration) also decrease or remain unchanged.

Summary: This study, based on the national innovative city policy, constructs a quasi-natural experiment and uses PSM and DID models to explore the impact of innovation-driven development on pollution reduction. The results show that the national innovative city policy has a positive effect on pollution reduction, but the effects vary, with larger cities showing smaller reductions and larger manufacturing scales and financial support for science and technology leading to more significant reductions in pollution. The mechanism of pollution reduction shows a non-linear trend as pollution emissions intensity increases.
