Nutrient potentiate the responses of plankton community structure and metabolites to cadmium: A microcosm study

Xue Bai et al.

Summary: This study found that Cd had significant effects on the plankton community structure and function, especially under high nutrient conditions. In terms of plankton structure, Cd consistently decreased Chl a concentration, total phytoplankton, Cyanophyta, and Chlomphyta abundances, as well as Copepoda abundance. In terms of community effects, Cd inhibited the photosystem II activity of phytoplankton community and led to reductions in DOC and pH, especially under high nutrient conditions.

Climate change impacts on the flow regime and water quality indicators using an artificial neural network (ANN): a case study in Saskatchewan, Canada

Amin Hassanjabbar et al.

Summary: In this study, the impacts of climate change on the water quantity and quality of the Qu'Appelle River in Saskatchewan, Canada were investigated using the artificial neural network (ANN) method. The study found that climate change would lead to a heterogeneous change in precipitation and temperature patterns, causing serious degradation in the river discharge as well as dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration levels, resulting in deterioration in the sustainability of the river system and ecological health of the region.

Modelling the influence of short-term climate variability on drinking water quality in tropical developing countries: A case study in Tanzania

Danlu Guo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between faecal contamination and short-term climate variability across different water sources. Results showed that short-term climate variability and baseline contamination levels can explain about half the observed variability in faecal contamination, with increased contamination related to recent heavy rainfall and high temperature. Unimproved water sources such as unprotected dug wells were found to have substantially higher climate sensitivity.

Evaluation and variation trends analysis of water quality in response to water regime changes in a typical river-connected lake (Dongting Lake), China

Mingming Geng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the water quality trend of Dongting Lake in China from 1991 to 2018 using the Mann-Kendall test and self-organising map. The results indicated a deterioration in water quality, particularly after the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. The concentrations of TN and BOD5 increased significantly, and the water quality classification showed a higher ecological risk in Dongting Lake.

Evaluation of Spatio-temporal Changes in Surface Water Quality and Their Suitability for Designated Uses, Mettur Reservoir, India

Ajoy Saha et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatio-temporal variation in surface water quality of the tropical reservoir Mettur, India, and found that spatial variation was influenced by input from industrial and domestic wastewater in the lacustrine zone of the reservoir. Despite temporal variability often exceeding spatial variability, factor analysis showed that basin geology, anthropogenic stress, and agricultural applications play crucial roles in determining the reservoir water quality.

Floating photovoltaics could mitigate climate change impacts on water body temperature and stratification

Giles Exley et al.

Summary: Floating solar photovoltaics, or floatovoltaics (FPV), are a new form of renewable energy experiencing rapid growth in deployment. While offering advantages such as decarbonizing energy supply and reducing land-use pressures, their impacts on lake temperature and stratification are still unresolved. The study simulated the effects of different sizes and designs of FPV arrays on lake thermal structure, finding complex and variable responses that could have significant implications for ecosystem services and water treatment costs.

Nitrogen cycling processes and the role of multi-trophic microbiota in dam-induced river-reservoir systems

Nan Yang et al.

Summary: The nitrogen (N) cycle is crucial for maintaining nutrient balance and global climate stability in river systems. The construction of hydropower dams has significant impacts on N cycling, but there is still a lack of comprehensive summary on N cycling and its controlling mechanisms in reservoirs affected by dams.

Random forest-based understanding and predicting of the impacts of anthropogenic nutrient inputs on the water quality of a tropical lagoon

Xin Fang et al.

Summary: This study utilized the random forest method to construct a model for predicting the water quality response to anthropogenic nutrient inputs in Xincun Lagoon. The results showed a non-linear superposition pattern in the intensity of stressors generated by different human activities, with the random forest method being a feasible solution to this phenomenon. The method established in this paper can help identify key pressure sources during the restoration of the lagoon environment to achieve economic and effective outcomes.

Min Guo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of future climate change and land management scenarios on water-related ecosystem services in the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone by 2030. It was found that climate change had a greater impact on water yield than LULC, but LULC change had a greater impact on water purification.

Impact of future climate scenarios on peatland and constructed wetland water quality: A mesocosm experiment within climate chambers

Shokoufeh Salimi et al.

Summary: Water purification is essential to wetlands, but climate change may have varying effects on peatlands and constructed wetlands. Warmer conditions could lead to different responses in terms of water quality, with constructed wetlands benefiting from a higher purification function under extreme climate scenarios while peatlands may deteriorate.

Deep Learning for Prediction of Water Quality Index Classification: Tropical Catchment Environmental Assessment

Tiyasha et al.

Summary: River water quality modeling using crucial artificial intelligent (AI) models has become an essential tool for river assessment and management. The study introduces H2O deep learning (DL), random forest (RF), and decision tree (DT) classification models for water quality index (WQI) calculation, with H2O DL demonstrating excellent performance. The classification based on WQI for small catchment is simple, fast, cost-effective, and beneficial for river water quality assessment, management, and policy-making.
