Microalgae simultaneously promote antibiotic removal and antibiotic resistance genes/bacteria attenuation in algal-bacterial granular sludge system

Wenhao Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that the algal-bacterial granular sludge system can effectively remove antibiotics and reduce the presence of antibiotic resistance genes and host bacteria. The growth of microalgae can enhance antibiotic removal efficiency and decrease the relative abundance of antibiotic-related genes and mobile genetic elements.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of eukaryote microalgae on the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profile of symbiotic bacteria. The results show that the symbiosis of microalgae can decrease the abundance of ARGs in bacteria, and there is a strong correlation between ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs).

Assessing the efficiency of constructed wetlands in removing PPCPs from treated wastewater and mitigating the ecotoxicological impacts

Mohamed Bayati et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effectiveness of a full scale constructed wetlands treatment system in removing PPCPs from municipal wastewater. The removal efficiencies varied depending on the physico-chemical properties of the molecules, with some substances showing high removal efficiencies. Overall, the majority of the PPCPs exhibited low aquatic risk in the effluent due to the efficiency of the treatment system.

Highly enhanced biodegradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in a novel tidal flow constructed wetland with baffle and plants

Yu-Xiao Cheng et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that modified tidal flow constructed wetlands are effective in removing organic pollutants, especially pharmaceutical and personal care products, with significant removal rates. Mass balance analysis of 24 PPCPs revealed that microbial degradation dominates their removal, with enhanced removal efficiency through changes in dominant microorganisms.

Influence of hydraulic loading rate on antibiotics removal and antibiotic resistance expression in soil layer of constructed wetlands

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of veterinary antibiotics and corresponding resistant genes in the soil layer of constructed wetlands, as well as their response to different hydraulic loading rates (HLR), were investigated in this study. Results showed that the soil layer had good performance in removing oxytetracycline and ciprofloxacin, but unsatisfactory results for sulfamethazine. The study also found that the removal efficiency of certain antibiotics in the soil layer could be affected by the hydraulic loading rate, and the expression of antibiotic resistance genes in the soil increased with higher hydraulic loading rates.

New insights on the combined removal of antibiotics and ARGs in urban wastewater through the use of two configurations of vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands

Cristina Avila et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of 49 antibiotics and 11 selected antibiotic resistance genes in two vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands. It was found that the partially saturated unit (SVF) showed more significant removal of certain antibiotics compared to the unsaturated unit (UVF). All selected antibiotic resistance genes were detected in influent wastewater and in the biofilm of both wetlands, with varying removal rates.

Fate and removal of bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands: Effect of mixed vegetation and substrate type

Ammar Abou-Kandil et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of cropping method and substrate type on the removal of bacterial and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by constructed wetlands (CWs) during start-up and maturation stages. The results showed that the removal efficiencies increased with operation time, with the tuff-filled serially planted CW demonstrating the highest efficiency in removing these genes. Metagenomic analysis revealed that most ARGs belonged to bacterial efflux transporter superfamilies, and although ARGs were removed, they were still detected in substrate biofilm with increased concentrations in effluents. The study suggested that a combination of serial plantation with high-surface-area substrate could enhance CWs' performance in removing bacteria and ARGs.

Performance of full scale constructed wetlands in removing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes

N. A. Sabri et al.

Summary: The study found that two constructed wetlands (CWs) showed significant removal of antibiotics, with some antibiotics having higher concentrations after treatment.
