Evaluation of the catalytic effect and migration behavior of potassium in the molten slag during the char/molten slag interfacial gasification

Xiaodan Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic effect and migration behavior of alkali metal (K) in molten slag during the gasification reaction of coal char particles on the molten slag surface. The results showed that the ionic K in the molten slag accelerated the char gasification rate and carbon conversion as a catalytic effect. The addition of K reduced the complete conversion time of char particles on the molten slag and increased the carbon conversion significantly.

Hierarchical porous carbon derived from coal and biomass for high performance supercapacitors

Xiaoyun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, soluble portions obtained from the co-thermal dissolution of rice husk and coal were used as carbon precursors to synthesize 3D hierarchical porous carbons. The electrochemical properties of the resulting carbons were investigated, and the results showed that the composition of the carbon precursors played a crucial role in determining the characteristics of the carbon materials. Nitrogen-containing organic matters in the precursors improved the conductivity, while oxygen-containing compounds contributed to pseudocapacitance. Moreover, carbon precursors with a high content of unsaturated structures exhibited excellent electrochemical properties.

A review on biochar production from different biomass wastes by recent carbonization technologies and its sustainable applications

Yee Xuan Seow et al.

Summary: Biochar, derived from plant-based biomass, is considered an ideal sustainable carbon material with low thermal conductivity, high porosity, high surface area, renewability, high stability, high carbon content, and bulk density. It has diverse applications in wastewater treatment, soil amendments, catalysts, and energy storage. Different synthesis techniques can be used to generate biochar with varying physicochemical properties.

Enhancing peroxymonosulfate activation by Co-Fe layered double hydroxide catalysts via compositing with biochar

Quanyun Ye et al.

Summary: Efficient and low-cost catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation are essential for pollution prevention and environmental remediation. In this study, biochar (BC) was composited with CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) to achieve enhanced PMS activation. The synergistic effect between BC and CoFe-LDH resulted in improved catalytic activity and stability, leading to higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the BC-LDH/PMS system. The degradation efficiency of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) was significantly higher in the BC-LDH/PMS system compared to the CoFe-LDH/PMS system, reaching 100% within 60 minutes.

The mechanism changes during bisphenol A degradation in three iron functionalized biochar/peroxymonosulfate systems: The crucial roles of iron contents and graphitized carbon layers

Kai Li et al.

Summary: Three magnetic biochar nanocomposites were prepared with different catalytic performances for bisphenol A degradation, where C800-3 showed the best performance. The dominant role of electron transfer pathway was gradually replaced by the SO4 center dot- pathway with the increase of iron amount and the destruction of graphitized carbon layers.

Evolution of biomass to porous graphite carbon by catalytic graphitization

Lili Gai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the direct growth of porous graphitic carbon (PGC) from sugarcane bagasse and microcrystalline cellulose, showing improved graphitic structure. The growth parameters and mechanism of PGC were elucidated, providing a comprehensive strategy for its rational and effective preparation. Results indicated the evolution of biomass carbon sources to PGC under appropriate conditions, opening a pathway for low-cost synthesis of graphitic carbon materials.
