Electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated by organics and containing chlorides: Effect of operative parameters on the abatement of organics and the generation of chlorinated by-products

Yongyong Hao et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated with recalcitrant organics and chlorides. This study systematically evaluated the effects of various operational parameters on the performance of the process using phenol as a model pollutant. The results showed that the removal of phenol and total organic carbon (TOC), as well as the generation of chlorinated by-products, greatly depended on the operational conditions such as the nature of the anode and cathode, current density, and chloride concentration. The use of different anode materials and lower current densities resulted in varying concentrations of chlorinated by-products. It was also found that the choice of suitable cathodes could effectively reduce the generation of specific chlorinated compounds. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into optimizing the electrochemical treatment process for wastewater containing recalcitrant organics and chlorides.

Electro-Fenton degradation of a ternary pharmaceutical mixture and its application in the regeneration of spent biochar

Anton Puga et al.

Summary: This study proposed an integrated valorisation system for fast and effective micropollutant remediation of a complex pharmaceutical mixture by combining adsorption and electro-Fenton processes. The natural iron content in biochar was found to be sufficient to catalyse the electro-Fenton regeneration, allowing for efficient recycling of the adsorption-electro-Fenton process.

Removal of antibiotic rifampicin from aqueous media by advanced electrochemical oxidation: Role of electrode materials, electrolytes and real water matrices

Laysa R. D. Brito et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are commonly detected in aquatic environments and are difficult to remove in sewage treatment plants. Electrochemical technologies, particularly using boron doped diamond (BDD) and carbon felt (CF) as anode and cathode materials, have shown to be effective in degrading antibiotics. Increasing applied current density can improve degradation efficiency.

Towards a more realistic heterogeneous electro-Fenton

Veronica Poza-Nogueiras et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the scaled-up heterogeneous electro-Fenton treatment was more efficient and cost-effective, with significantly increased treatment volume and hydrogen peroxide production, as well as reduced cost for clofibric acid removal. Additionally, reactor design was highlighted as crucial in the scaling-up process, and the presence of aromatic intermediates and carboxylic acids was confirmed through analysis.

Destruction of valsartan using electrochemical and electrochemical/ persulfate process. Kinetics, identification of degradation pathway and application in aqueous matrices

Olga S. Arvaniti et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the electrochemical oxidation of the antihypertensive drug valsartan on a boron-doped diamond anode, exploring the effects of various factors such as current density, solution pH, valsartan concentration, and water matrix on the degradation process. The addition of persulfate was found to significantly enhance the performance of the process, leading to a faster degradation rate and the formation of various transformation products.
