Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the association between milk metabolites and udder quarter health status in dairy cows

T. Bobbo et al.

Summary: Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to study the relationship between milk metabolome and udder quarter health status in dairy cows. Analysis showed that each cow could be identified based on its milk metabolomic fingerprint, and quarter milk samples of cows defined as cases were found to have mostly coagulase-negative staphylococci. Further analysis on metabolites levels indicated potential novel indicators of udder health status and milk quality.

Comparative metabolite profiling of raw milk from subclinical and clinical mastitis cows using1H-NMR combined with chemometric analysis

Mayuree Luangwilai et al.

Summary: This study characterized and compared non-volatile metabolite profiles of raw milk from healthy, subclinical, and clinical mastitis cows using a non-targeted proton nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomic approach. Significant changes in various metabolites were associated with mastitis status, suggesting potential biomarkers for diagnosing mastitis infection in cows.

Application of machine-learning methods to milk mid-infrared spectra for discrimination of cow milk from pasture or total mixed ration diets

M. Frizzarin et al.

Summary: The prevalence of grass-fed labeled food products has increased, making verification of these claims crucial for consumer confidence. Mid-infrared spectroscopy is effective for authenticating milk sources, with linear discriminant analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis offering the highest accuracy in predicting cow diet based on spectra. Efficient strategies for selecting discriminating wavelengths in the spectra are also emphasized.

Differences in milk metabolites in Malnad Gidda (Bos indicus) cows reared under pasture-based feeding system

M. Ashokan et al.

Summary: This study compared the milk metabolites of grazing and non-grazing early lactating Malnad Gidda cows, identifying 35 differentially regulated metabolites, including various carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleosides, and vitamin derivatives. The lipid profile showed a lesser difference between grazing and non-grazing cows compared to polar metabolites. This study presents the largest inventory of milk metabolomics data of an Indian cattle (Bos indicus) breed, and may contribute to the emergence of Nutri-metabolomics and veterinary omics research.

Summer Pasture in Mountainous Area Affects Milk Fatty Acid Profile of Dual-Purpose Cows

Giovanni Niero et al.

Summary: Summer grazing has a positive effect on the quality of milk fatty acids, with an increase in concentrations of long-chain fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, while concentrations of short- and medium-chain fatty acids decrease.

Dairy Cows' Health during Alpine Summer Grazing as Assessed by Milk Traits, Including Differential Somatic Cell Count: A Case Study from Italy

Giovanni Niero et al.

Summary: Dairy herds in alpine areas often use summer grazing to reduce feeding costs and maintain local traditions for niche dairy products. Proper grazing management can improve udder health and metabolic efficiency in cows. This study found that pasture grazing had no detrimental effects on dairy cows when managed correctly, contributing to the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of small dairy farms in the alpine regions.

Detection of bovine milk adulteration in caprine milk with N-acetyl carbohydrate biomarkers by using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

L. Rysova et al.

Summary: The study successfully identified N-acetyl carbohydrates as biomarkers for detecting bovine milk in caprine milk using H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, with high accuracy. This method effectively differentiated caprine milk adulterated with 5% and 10% of bovine milk.
