Effects of a single transdermal administration of flunixin meglumine in early postpartum Holstein Friesian dairy cows: Part 1. Inflammatory and metabolic markers, uterine health, and indicators of pain

R. Schmitt et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of transdermal administration of flunixin meglumine (FM) on inflammatory and metabolic markers, uterine health, and pain in postpartum dairy cows. The results showed that FM treatment slightly reduced inflammation and the risk for metritis in primiparous cows, improved metabolic profile in multiparous cows, and reduced expressions of pain in all cows.

Evaluation of different acute-phase proteins for herd health diagnostics in early postpartum Holstein Friesian dairy cows

Ruth Schmitt et al.

Summary: This research communication compares acute-phase protein concentrations in transition dairy cows on different farms and investigates their association with clinical health parameters. The study suggests that haptoglobin (Hp) may be a sensitive parameter for detecting postpartum cows at risk of excessive inflammation. Hp is significantly correlated with both body temperature and Metricheck score, demonstrating its potential as a valuable diagnostic parameter during the periparturient period.

Invited review: The influence of immune activation on transition cow health and performance-A critical evaluation of traditional dogmas

E. A. Horst et al.

Summary: The transition from gestation to lactation in cows is accompanied by significant physiological, metabolic, and inflammatory changes, with the success of this period impacting the entire lactation cycle and potential future lactations. Despite traditional beliefs about the role of adipose tissue mobilization and hypocalcemia in transition period success, recent research suggests that immune activation and inflammation play a crucial role in the adaptive process. The utilization of glucose by the immune system leading to increased NEFA and ketones, coupled with the impact on hypocalcemia, may explain the relationship between immune activation and poor health, production, and reproduction outcomes in dairy cows.
