Natural inflation after Planck 2018

Nina K. Stein et al.

Summary: The study found that under conventional post-inflationary dynamics, Natural Inflation with a cosine potential is disfavored by current data with a confidence level of over 95%. When considering prolonged reheating, Natural Inflation can be consistent with current observational constraints, but requires values of T-re below the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. Adding a SHOES prior on the Hubble Constant H-0 only worsens the fit.

Palatini f(R) Gravity and Variants of k-/Constant Roll/Warm Inflation within Variation of Strong Coupling Scenario

Mahmoud AlHallak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of Palatini f(R) theory, characterized by an alpha R2 term, in a scenario driven by a temporal variation of strong coupling constant. The findings suggest that a quadratic kinetic energy can be obtained without dropping this term, leading to a kinematically-induced inflationary paradigm. The study also reveals that fitting the Planck 2018 data requires fine tuning for the alpha >> 1 case, known as k-inflation, with nonvanishing nonminimal coupling to gravity parameter xi, while the alpha << 1 case, studied in the constant-roll regime, can fit the data for vanishing xi. Additionally, the varying strong coupling inflation scenario remains viable when implemented through a warm inflation scenario with or without f(R) gravity.

BICEP/Keck data and quadratic gravity

Alberto Salvio

Summary: The recent results of the BICEP and Keck collaborations have placed tight constraints on many inflationary models. One possible way to avoid these constraints is by introducing quadratic-in-curvature terms that can UV complete gravity while respecting stability and unitarity. The predictions of quadratic gravity are computed and compared with the BICEP/Keck constraints in two inflationary scenarios, (critical) Higgs inflation and natural inflation, which are already ruled out in Einstein gravity. It is shown that quadratic gravity can restore agreement with the observational constraints in both scenarios.

Stable small spatial hairs in a power-law k-inflation model

Tuan Q. Do

Summary: In this paper, we extend our investigation of the cosmic no-hair conjecture within non-canonical anisotropic inflation and find a solution with stable and attractive hairs violating the cosmic no-hair conjecture. The corresponding tensor-to-scalar ratio of this model is highly consistent with the observational data of the Planck 2018.

Natural-scalaron inflation

Alberto Salvio

Summary: A new multifield scenario involving both a scalaron and a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson as active components, known as natural-scalaron inflation, is investigated. The study shows that there is a robust inflationary attractor even when the masses of the two inflatons are comparable. Additionally, the presence of the scalaron allows for satisfying all observational bounds in a large region of the parameter space, unlike what happens in pure-natural inflation.

Non-minimally coupled scalar k-inflation dynamics

V. K. Oikonomou

Summary: This study focuses on k-inflation theories with non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to gravity, investigating the evolution of the scalar field under slow-roll or constant-roll conditions when a scalar potential is present or absent. The results show that the theory is compatible with the latest Planck data in the slow-roll models with scalar potential, but less appealing in models without potential. Additionally, it is suggested that the Einstein frame counterpart of non-minimal k-inflation models with scalar potential may be a viable theory due to the conformal invariance of the observational indices.

Natural inflation with a nonminimal coupling to gravity

Yakefu Reyimuajia et al.

Summary: By introducing a very weak nonminimal coupling of the inflaton field to gravity, the tension between natural inflation model and recent Planck data can be alleviated, leading to good agreement between predictions and observations. The predictions of the extended model are consistent with observational data within certain parameter ranges.

Power-law f(R) gravity corrected canonical scalar field inflation

V. K. Oikonomou

Summary: This study introduces a new theoretical framework of power-law f(R) gravity corrected canonical scalar field inflation and examines the inflationary dynamics of this new framework. The main characteristic is the dominance of a power-law f(R) gravity term, compared to the Einstein-Hilbert term, with good agreement with the latest Planck data for a wide range of free parameters. The resulting theory allows for viable inflationary theories which may otherwise be non-viable.

Reheating constraints on k-inflation

Pooja Pareek et al.

Summary: In this study, constraints on the k-inflation model with a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term and a power-law kinetic term during reheating are revisited. By parametrizing the reheating phase in terms of parameters such as the reheating temperature, the number of e-folds during reheating, and the effective equation of state during reheating, bounds on the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio can be obtained. Different kinetic terms and potentials have varying impacts on these constraints, with specific conditions needing to be met for agreement with observational data.
