First Results from HERA Phase I: Upper Limits on the Epoch of Reionization 21 cm Power Spectrum

Zara Abdurashidova et al.

Summary: We report the upper limits of the Epoch of Reionization 21 cm power spectrum at redshifts 7.9 and 10.4 using data from Phase I of HERA. The results show evidence of systematics that can be suppressed with systematic models, providing upper limits on the power spectrum. These findings are a promising first step towards the development of an analysis pipeline for HERA.

A numerical study of 21-cm signal suppression and noise increase in direction-dependent calibration of LOFAR data

M. Mevius et al.

Summary: This article investigates the systematic effects in direction-dependent gain calibration in the LOFAR 21-cm EoR experiment. It shows that calibrating short baselines using longer baselines can avoid signal suppression but leads to excess variance. The study demonstrates that regularization algorithms can mitigate this excess variance.

Epoch of reionization parameter estimation with the 21-cm bispectrum

Catherine A. Watkinson et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first application of the isosceles bispectrum to MCMC parameter inference from the cosmic 21-cm signal. The study extends the MCMC sampler and uses the fast bispectrum code to compute the likelihood. The results show that using the isosceles bispectrum can substantially reduce the bias on the inferred parameter means and credible intervals in the reionization models.

Statistical analysis of the causes of excess variance in the 21 cm signal power spectra obtained with the Low-Frequency Array

H. Gan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causes of excess variance in the observed 21 cm power spectra. Through analyzing data obtained from the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), it is found that the excess variance is related to sky effects, particularly the presence of bright and distant sources such as Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A.

Improving constraints on the reionization parameters using 21-cm bispectrum

Himanshu Tiwari et al.

Summary: Radio interferometric experiments aim to constrain the reionization model parameters. The bispectrum, as the lowest order statistic to capture non-Gaussianity, provides tighter constraints on the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) parameters compared to the power spectrum or limited shapes of k-triangles. Using all unique k-triangle bispectra can improve the constraints on parameters by a factor of 2 - 4 over using the power spectrum alone.

Astrophysical information from the Rayleigh-Jeans Tail of the CMB

Raghunath Ghara et al.

Summary: One possible explanation for the recent measurements of a strong absorption signal around 80 MHz is the presence of an excess radio background. This excess could be caused by the decay of unstable particles into dark photons with a mixing angle with electromagnetism. The measurements are used to derive constraints on the properties of early galaxies and the parameters of the particle physics model. The results suggest a high star formation efficiency, suppression of star formation in certain halos, and specific ranges for the mass and lifetime of the decaying dark matter particles, dark photon mass, and mixing angle.

The bispectrum and 21-cm foregrounds during the Epoch of Reionization

Catherine A. Watkinson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that foreground effects can overwhelm the EoR structures in the 21-cm bispectrum, while applying specific filtering techniques may help reduce the impact of foregrounds. Additionally, instrumental effects should be carefully considered as they can significantly corrupt the bispectrum, necessitating a thorough understanding of the errors and biases associated with foreground removal before practical application in data analysis.

The Epoch of Reionization 21-cm bispectrum: the impact of light-cone effects and detectability

Rajesh Mondal et al.

Summary: We studied the spherically averaged bispectrum of the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization and found that the light-cone effect becomes significant on scales less than or similar to 0.1 Mpc(-1), where cosmic variance errors dominate for most triangle shapes. Only for squeezed limit triangles does the impact of the light-cone effect exceed cosmic variance.

Redshifted 21-cm bispectrum - II. Impact of the spin temperature fluctuations and redshift space distortions on the signal from the Cosmic Dawn

Mohd Kamran et al.

Summary: In this study, the 21-cm signal bispectrum during the Cosmic Dawn is analyzed, revealing trends in magnitude and sign evolution with redshift that depend on the source model. Two consecutive sign reversals in the bispectrum are observed under certain circumstances, providing potential insights into the CD history. Additionally, the impact of spin temperature fluctuations and redshift space distortions on the bispectra are quantified for the first time, demonstrating significant effects on different stages of the CD.

Investigating X-Ray Sources during the Epoch of Reionization with the 21 cm Signal

Qing-Bo Ma et al.

Summary: The effective heating from the hot interstellar medium increases the global average of the 21 cm signal, reduces its fluctuations and power spectrum, while the impact of X-ray binaries is similar but delayed and less intense due to lower heating efficiency. The presence of nuclear black holes has a behavior similar to only considering stars, with a clear impact visible in the later stages of reionization. The differences between the source scenarios investigated are larger than instrumental noise at z greater than or equal to 7-8, suggesting the possibility of constraining the spectral energy distribution of sources contributing to reionization in the future.

Constraining the state of the intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization using MWA 21-cm signal observations

Raghunath Ghara et al.

Summary: The MWA team obtained new upper limits on the power spectrum of the 21-cm signal at 6.5-8.7 redshifts and used Bayesian inference to constrain the ionization and thermal state of the IGM, revealing no constraints on IGM state above 7.8 redshift in the absence of an additional radio background. The results suggest that models with an IGM fraction of ionized regions below 0.6 and average gas temperature less than or equal to 10(3) h(-1) are disfavored, along with an exclusion of an additional radio background of at least 0.008% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz within the same credible interval limits.

Redshift-space distortions in simulations of the 21-cm signal from the cosmic dawn

Hannah E. Ross et al.

Summary: The study indicates that redshift-space distortions have a significant impact on the 21-cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn, increasing the detectability of the signal while also decreasing non-Gaussianity of fluctuations from inhomogeneous X-ray heating. Mock observations suggest that imaging the Cosmic Dawn may be possible through telescope observations, with redshift-space distortions dramatically boosting fluctuations from the inhomogeneous Ly alpha background.

Comparing foreground removal techniques for recovery of the LOFAR-EoR 21 cm power spectrum

Ian Hothi et al.

Summary: The study compares the performance of foreground removal techniques in detecting the redshifted 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen, finding that GMCA and FastICA are able to reproduce the latest upper limit signal but deviate from noise-limit at larger k-scales. It is also discovered that fewer independent components are needed for lower k-scales, while more are required for larger scales. Additionally, the study concludes that the current usage of GPR by the LOFAR collaboration is the appropriate removal technique.
