Reusing and Extending Standards-Based Unit Manufacturing Process Models for Characterizing Sustainability Performance

Arvind Shankar Raman et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, manufacturing researchers have made numerous efforts to characterize manufacturing processes for sustainability performance. These efforts involve the development of frameworks, methodologies, and standards, as well as the linkage of unit manufacturing process models. This paper reviews these efforts, identifies research gaps, and proposes a methodology for creating and extending composable models of unit manufacturing processes based on sustainable manufacturing standards.

Make carbon footprints available-And it is not just one value

Ari Nissinen et al.

Summary: The carbon footprint should play a role in decision-making for manufacturing, retail, and consumption. A systematic approach is needed to collect and present reliable and comparable carbon footprint information. Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and barcode symbols can identify products. The proposed framework can help build user-friendly databases to improve the production and usability of carbon footprint information.

Life cycle assessment of a leather shoe supply chain

Marta Rossi et al.

Summary: The fashion industry in the EU contributes significantly to environmental pressure. A study on the environmental impacts of leather shoe production chain found that slaughtering and tanning stages are the most unsustainable due to long distances, lorries transport, and use of unsustainable chemicals. Implementing alternative scenarios like transport means, cotton substitution, and green purchasing can reduce environmental impacts by about 30%.
