Multiscale simulation of molecular gas flows by the general synthetic iterative scheme

Wei Su et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a general synthetic iterative scheme (GSIS) to efficiently solve multiscale gas dynamics problems and accurately find steady-state solutions for molecular gas flows. Fourier stability analysis and asymptotic analysis demonstrate that GSIS can rapidly converge to steady-state solutions throughout the flow regime, and recover the Navier-Stokes equations when the Knudsen number is small.

General synthetic iterative scheme for nonlinear gas kinetic simulation of multi-scale rarefied gas flows

Lianhua Zhu et al.

Summary: The general synthetic iterative scheme (GSIS) has been extended to find the steady-state solution of the nonlinear gas kinetic equation, addressing the issues of slow convergence and requirement of ultra-fine grids in near-continuum flows. The tight coupling of gas kinetic and macroscopic synthetic equations, along with the simplification in constructing higher-order constitutive relations, allows for faster convergence and reduced deviation in the solution. Additionally, the GSIS can be applied to a wide range of engineering applications due to its independence on the specific form of Boltzmann collision operator and compatibility with computational fluid dynamics techniques.

Heat vortices of ballistic and hydrodynamic phonon transport in two-dimensional materials

Chuang Zhang et al.

Summary: Heat conduction in solid materials can exhibit fluid dynamics behavior when normal scattering dominates phonon transport, leading to the prediction of heat vortices with frequency-independent relaxation time in the hydrodynamic regime. This phenomenon can also appear in other regimes such as the ballistic regime, with differences in vortex sizes and critical values observed. The study provides insights into the wider window of heat vortices in different regimes and their characteristics in different material structures.

Non-Fourier phonon heat conduction at the microscale and nanoscale

Gang Chen

Summary: Phonon heat conduction at the microscale and nanoscale exhibits complex phenomena beyond the traditional predictions of Fourier's law, attracting wide attention. The development in studying phonon heat conduction phenomena reveals that besides classical size effects, other novel phenomena have emerged, often occurring at microscale and nanoscale, or only at elevated temperatures.

Derivation of a hydrodynamic heat equation from the phonon Boltzmann equation for general semiconductors

Lluc Sendra et al.

Summary: The study presents a formalism to solve the phonon Boltzmann transport equation for finite Knudsen numbers, providing a hydrodynamic heat transport equation for general semiconductors. This method captures nonlocal effects in systems dominated by momentum-preserving normal collisions and in kinetic materials dominated by resistive collisions.
