Effect of interparticle dipolar interaction on pore clogging during microfiltration

Xiaoyu Qian et al.

Summary: Numerical investigations were conducted on the clogging of adhesive particles carrying electric dipoles at pore scale using an adhesive discrete element method (DEM). The results showed that the long-range dipolar interaction promoted the clogging process, which was quantified by various parameters. A clogging phase diagram was constructed for neutral and polarized particles, and the influence of the dipolar interaction on the clogging-nonclogging transition was described. Additionally, the cake structure was characterized by different mathematical descriptions, with looser structures formed with increasing adhesion and dipolar interaction, and more ordered structures observed with stronger dipolar interaction. The role of fluid stress in the compression and restructuring of the cake structure was also identified. Finally, a schematic representation of the cake structure was established, providing insights into the relationship between the structure and particle-scale interactions.

Mechanism for clogging of microchannels by small particles with liquid cohesion

Yachan Shao et al.

Summary: The study found that liquid cohesion significantly promotes particle deposition and agglomerate growth in microchannels, leading to clogging. A phase diagram is constructed to quantify the clogging-nonclogging transition. Strong cohesion increases slip velocity or drag between particles and fluid, suppressing resuspension of deposited particles and resulting in clogging.

Effect of long-range Coulomb repulsion on adhesive particle agglomeration in homogeneous isotropic turbulence

Xuan Ruan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the early-stage agglomeration of identically charged microparticles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence through numerical simulations. It is found that as particle charge increases, the collision frequency changes, and the dominant collision mechanism shifts. In the presence of both Coulomb repulsion and adhesion, particles with moderate collision velocities are more likely to contribute to agglomerates formation.
