Atypical Arousal Regulation in Children With Autism but Not With Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder as Indicated by Pupillometric Measures of Locus Coeruleus Activity

Nico Bast et al.

Summary: Slower reaction time in ASD and ADHD may be attributed to atypical arousal regulation, as indicated by larger baseline pupil size and smaller stimulus-evoked pupillary response in these disorders. The study suggests that altered activity in the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system, which underlies arousal regulation, may contribute to the slower task performance observed in ASD.

Age-related changes in CB1 receptor expression and function and the behavioral effects of cannabinoid receptor ligands

Brett C. Ginsburg et al.

Summary: With the increasing use of cannabinoids among aging populations, it is important to understand age-related differences in their behavioral effects. This study found that there were no significant differences in the behavioral effects of cannabinoids between young adult and aged rats. However, there were age-related changes in CB1 receptor binding sites in the cortical regions of aged rats, suggesting neurobiological changes associated with aging. These changes may be compensated for by an increase in receptor function in cortical areas.

Sex-specific divergent maturational trajectories in the postnatal rat basolateral amygdala

Pauline Guily et al.

Summary: This study compared the morphology and function of basolateral amygdala (BLA) neurons in male and female rats during puberty and adulthood. The results showed that BLA neurons in adult males were more excitable than those in females. During puberty, male rats had smaller and shorter action potentials, while females had larger fast afterhyperpolarizations. Additionally, there were sex-specific differences in spine length, synaptic properties, and the developmental courses of long-term potentiation and depression.

Sex-specific characteristics of cells expressing the cannabinoid 1 receptor in the dorsal horn of the lumbar spinal cord

Yulin Zhang et al.

Summary: It is increasingly evident that sex differences exist in the processing of acute and chronic pain in both rodents and humans. The lumbar spinal cord's dorsal horn plays a crucial role in pain pathways, and the endocannabinoid system, including the cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1R), has been shown to be involved in nociceptive information processing. This study used the CB1R-iCre-EGFP mouse strain to examine CB1R expression in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The results revealed no sex difference in CB1R expression but demonstrated a dynamic distribution pattern in female mice. Furthermore, the study found that CB1R-expressing cells were predominantly GABAergic neurons and represented a subset of spinal projection neurons in both sexes.

Nitric oxide-mediated defensive and antinociceptive responses organised at the anterior hypothalamus of mice are modulated by glutamatergic inputs from area 24b of the cingulate cortex

Luiz Luciano Falconi-Sobrinho et al.

Summary: The study found that activation of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptors in Cg1 area increased escape behavior, reduced freezing behavior, and attenuated antinociceptive responses to SIN-1 microinjections in the anterior hypothalamus. Neurotracing and immunohistochemistry results suggest that these responses are mediated by glutamatergic synapses at the anterior hypothalamus.

A Brainstem reticulotegmental neural ensemble drives acoustic startle reflexes

Summary: The function of the brainstem reticulotegmental nucleus (RtTg) and its related circuits is not fully understood. This study demonstrates that a cochlear nucleus-RtTg-spinal motor neuron circuit mediates acoustic startle reflexes.
