3D Chiral MetaCrystals

Marco Esposito et al.

Summary: The fine control of chiral light-matter interaction at the nanoscale using designed metamaterial architecture is a cutting-edge craft with applications in biosensing, quantum, and classic nanophotonics. A novel concept of a 3D chiral metacrystal is proposed, where chiroptical properties are finely tuned by in-plane and out-of-plane diffractive coupling, showing potential for enantiomeric detection and integration with quantum emitters.

Chiral Generation of Hot Carriers for Polarization-Sensitive Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Yoel Negrin-Montecelo et al.

Summary: Mastering chirality at the nanoscale is important for scientists in various fields. Recently, researchers have proposed the use of chiral plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis to drive polarization-dependent photochemistry. In this study, inorganic nanometric chiral templates were used to assemble gold and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, leading to the formation of plasmon-based photocatalysts with polarization-dependent reactivity. This approach opens up new possibilities for applications in chirality and photocatalysis, particularly in plasmon-induced chiral photochemistry.

Temperature-Controlled Optical Activity and Negative Refractive Index

Meng Liu et al.

Summary: Chiral media exhibit optical activity by differential retardation and attenuation of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. Control of chirality, optical activity, and refractive index is demonstrated using a terahertz metamaterial based on 3D-chiral metallic resonators and achiral vanadium dioxide inclusions. The chiral structure shows pronounced optical activity and a negative refractive index at room temperature, while becoming achiral and having a positive refractive index upon heating. The chiral response originates from magnetic coupling and transitions to electric dipole excitations. Rotationally symmetric design allows the structure to function as a tunable polarization rotator, adjustable linear polarization converter, and switchable circular polarizer.

Enhanced optical asymmetry in supramolecular chiroplasmonic assemblies with long-range order

Jun Lu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the limitations of optical asymmetry in chiral assemblies of plasmonic nanoparticles can be overcome by long-range organization of nanoparticles, similar to liquid crystals. This long-range order in helical assemblies enhances optical asymmetry by reducing scattering and activating energy states with antiparallel orientation of dipoles.

Artificial Propeller Chirality and Counterintuitive Reversal of Circular Dichroism in Twisted Meta-molecules

Chang-Yin Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, an optical propeller chirality in artificially twisted meta-molecules is demonstrated, which is remarkably different from conventional optical helical chirality, resulting in giant circular dichroism (CD) in a single layer of meta-molecule array. The periodic meta-molecule array is hybridized by unit cells with two different chiral centers due to the special twist of the propeller blades, and the CD response can be readily reversed by tailoring the interference phase through engineering the structural blades without inverting the geometric chirality, as demonstrated in experiments using a nano-kirigami fabrication technique.
