Sparganosis (Spirometra) i n Europe in the Molecular Era

Roman Kuchta et al.

Summary: Sparganosis is a foodborne and waterborne disease caused by species of the tapeworm genus Spirometra, with global distribution across inhabited continents including Europe. The presence of two different species of Spirometra in Europe has been confirmed, with Spirometra erinaceieuropaei restricted to Europe and Spirometra tnansoni representing a lineage mainly distributed across Asia and Oceania. The parasite is common in Eastern Europe and its distribution has potential to expand, increasing the risks of human infection.

Zoonotic hookworms of dogs and cats-lessons from the past to inform current knowledge and future directions of research

Rebecca J. Traub et al.

Summary: The early-to-mid 1900s marked the first reports of zoonotic hookworm cases in humans, providing valuable evidence for further research. Ancylostoma ceylanicum, the second most common zoonotic hookworm in the Asia Pacific region, has been reported in Africa and South America. Despite technological progress in parasite diagnostics, epidemiological research on zoonotic hookworms in humans has remained stagnant.

Sensitive universal detection of blood parasites by selective pathogen-DNA enrichment and deep amplicon sequencing

Briana R. Flaherty et al.

Summary: The study designed a second set of pan-eukaryotic primers flanking the previously described priming sites for nested PCR amplification of the established 18S rDNA target. This nested approach allowed for a second restriction digestion between the first and second PCR, reducing host-derived DNA mass while increasing PCR cycles.

Summary: The study proposes a new method for automatically detecting malaria parasites by adjusting the parameters of object detection algorithms and adding more detection layers to improve accuracy; experimental results show that the method performs excellently in malaria diagnosis and is particularly suitable for low-resource settings.

Rapid diagnostic test negative Plasmodium falciparum malaria in a traveller returning from Ethiopia

Stefan Schlabe et al.

Summary: HRP2-negative P. falciparum strains may not be detected by currently available HRP2-based RDTs. This case highlights the importance of confirming malaria through microscopy and/or qPCR when suspected, especially in regions where pfhrp2/3 deletion is prevalent. Such cases can lead to false-negative results in RDTs and may pose a risk to returning travelers from endemic areas.

Endemicity of Paragonimus and paragonimiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and mapping reveals stability of transmission in endemic foci for a multi-host parasite system

Muriel Rabone et al.

Summary: Paragonimiasis is a neglected disease caused by zoonotic trematodes of Paragonimus spp., particularly in Africa. Recent transmission was found in Southeast Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, and Cameroon, with higher prevalence of P. uterobilateralis than P. africanus. More studies are urgently needed to determine the distribution and diversity of Paragonimus species in Africa.

Summary: Human alveolar echinococcosis is a zoonotic cestode infection that can be fatal without treatment. Recent studies have shown a new strain of Echinococcus multilocularis in wildlife and AE cases in western Canada. The incidence of AE in North America may be increasing due to factors such as urbanization of coyotes and a growing number of immunocompromised individuals.

Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi in New Guinea: neglected, ignored and unexplored

Richard S. Bradbury

Summary: Strongyloidiasis is still endemic in the Island of New Guinea, with both Strongyloides stercoralis and Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi infections present. S. f. kellyi infections are most common in infants and young children, and can lead to severe protein-losing enteropathy and swollen belly syndrome. There is currently limited research on S. f. kellyi and further studies are needed to explore this neglected human helminth infection.
