Environmental and economic sustainability through innovative green products by remanufacturing

Biswajit Sarkar et al.

Summary: The rapid advancement of technology requires the massive development of innovative green products to address global warming issues. This study focuses on considering the environmental risks associated with innovative green product manufacturing in an uncertain environment with insufficient information. Three models are developed based on different production strategies for two types of innovative green products. The models utilize a distribution-free approach to deal with random variables and introduce the concept of green innovation through remanufacturing to improve waste management. The findings suggest that highly green innovative products perform better under high uncertainties in demand and supply. Furthermore, new green products should only be introduced if their expected profit exceeds the loss of existing products. The policy innovation of remanufacturing is more cost-effective compared to traditional innovation policies. The models are solved with numerical examples and sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate their robustness.

Evaluation of the anaerobic degradation of food waste collection bags made of paper or bioplastic

Giovanni Dolci et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anaerobic degradability of bioplastic bags used for food waste collection, finding a lower degradability under anaerobic conditions. Additionally, the paper bag showed higher degradability in semi-continuous tests compared to results observed in BMP tests. These results emphasize the importance of test methods to better simulate real operational conditions.

Anaerobic co-digestion of a lignocellulosic residue with different organic wastes: Relationship between biomethane yield, soluble organic matter and process stability

Mirko Cucina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate anaerobic co-digestion of lignocellulosic residues and the role of soluble organic matter, showing that co-digestion can increase biomethane yields with a positive correlation to soluble organic matter. Fruit wastes and brewery trub positively affected anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic residues, but fruit waste co-digestion may lead to early acidification.

Renewable energy supply chain management with flexibility and automation in a production system

Mitali Sarkar et al.

Summary: Due to technological development, energy demand is rapidly increasing, but available energy is finite. This study introduces energy supply chain management, where waste is converted into renewable energy to mitigate environmental pollution. Considering equal and unequal power of two players, cooperation policy results in higher profit in the energy supply chain.

Methane production and active microbial communities during anaerobic digestion of three commercial biodegradable coffee capsules under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

G. Cazaudehore et al.

Summary: The biodegradable plastics in coffee capsules were compared under mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion conditions, with the latter showing better degradation efficiency. Different biodegradable plastics had minimal impact on microbial community composition, with the genus Tepidimicrobium identified as a key microorganism involved in the thermophilic conversion of biodegradable plastic into methane.
