Heat integration of power-to-heat technologies: Case studies on heat recovery systems subject to electrified heating

Jin-Kuk Kim et al.

Summary: A systematic design methodology is developed for the electrified supply of heat in process industries, aiming to provide guidelines for the economic and energy-efficient transition from fossil fuel to renewable-based electricity system. The study proposes the most appropriate strategy for implementing electrified sources for energy systems, particularly in the context of Heat Integration. By considering the introduction of electrified sources for industries, the design complexities of Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) can be considerably reduced. The preliminary techno-economic assessment helps understand the economic limitations of industrial electrification under current energy prices and sensitivities.

Operation optimization of auxiliary electric boiler system in HTR-PM nuclear power plant

Xingxuan Du et al.

Summary: This study focuses on optimizing the hot standby operations of electric boiler systems. Mathematical models and a control simulation platform were developed, and two optimization strategies were proposed. The results show that these strategies can improve system response speed, reduce power consumption, and enhance dynamic performance and economy.

Towards Net Zero Energy Factory: A multi-objective approach to optimally size and operate industrial flexibility solutions

L. Bartolucci et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for sizing and operating new flexibility options within a German carpentry, targeting to be operated as Net Zero Energy Factory (NZEF). It aims to maximize the integration of locally generated electric power and the electric demand for manufacturing processes. The study shows that optimally controlled energy storage systems can significantly reduce energy exchange with the grid, and the introduction of electric vehicles increases renewable energy self-consumption and carbon emissions savings.

Life cycle analysis of a photovoltaic driven reversible heat pump

Carolina Riva et al.

Summary: This study focuses on evaluating the environmental benefits of PV-driven heat pumps compared to conventional heating and cooling alternatives. Results show that in locations with the best performance in global warming, CO2 equivalent emissions can be reduced by up to 57%. However, the benefits of excess electricity production are counterbalanced by the manufacturing and end-of-life footprints once the optimal number of installed PV panels is exceeded.

A review of China's municipal solid waste (MSW) and comparison with international regions: Management and technologies in treatment and resource utilization

Yin Ding et al.

Summary: The management of MSW in China still has room for improvement and should be combined with advanced technologies to achieve resource utilization. The amount of MSW generated in eastern coastal regions of China is increasing, but the management efficiency is lower than that of developed countries.
