Reconceptualization of Hormetic Responses in the Frame of Redox Toxicology

Zoi Skaperda et al.

Summary: Exposure to low levels of toxic agents or stressful stimuli leads to cellular adaptive mechanisms, displaying hormesis and redox adaptations. The dose, duration of exposure, and the specific cell, tissue or organ exposed play crucial roles in the hormetic effect.

Oxidative damage and mitochondrial functionality in hearts from KO UCP3 mice housed at thermoneutrality

Gaetana Napolitano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of UCP3 on the heart of mice housed at thermoneutral temperature. The results show that UCP3 deficiency reduces mitochondrial respiratory capacity and increases oxidative stress levels and susceptibility. However, the activity of antioxidant enzymes is not affected. These findings suggest that UCP3 helps to preserve mitochondrial function by mitigating oxidative stress.

Challenges and opportunities for more efficient water use and circular wastewater management. The case of Campania Region, Italy

M. Colella et al.

Summary: Global water demand is expected to increase by 55% by 2050 due to population growth and urbanization. The lack of proper wastewater management is causing negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems, human health, and economic productivity. Sustainable practices such as wastewater reuse and resource recovery can lead to environmental, economic, and social benefits in the water sector.

Optimization of stocking density of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio var. koi) with gotukola (Centella asiatica) in an aquaponic system using phytoremediated aquaculture wastewater

K. K. T. Nuwansi et al.

Summary: By optimizing stocking density of koi carp with gotukola in a phytoremediated aquaponic system, it was found that the best results were achieved with a stocking density of 1.4 kg m(-3) (T1), although 2.1 kg m(-3) (T2) also showed good performance. Different densities had significant effects on the growth and health status of koi carp.

Urea Excretion and Arginase Activity as New Biomarkers for Nitrite Stress in Freshwater Aquatic Animals

Gaetana Napolitano et al.

Summary: The study found that under sub-lethal nitrite stress, blood nitrite concentration significantly increased in fish and crustaceans, along with increased arginase activity, urea excretion, and blood urea levels. These parameters may serve as markers of sub-lethal nitrite stress in freshwater fish and crustaceans.

Potential utilization of fish waste for the sustainable production of microalgae rich in renewable protein and phycocyanin-Arthrospira platensis/Spirulina

G. Shanthi et al.

Summary: The fish processing industry generates solid biological waste that has serious environmental impacts. Fish waste can be valorized as fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) for cultivating Spirulina, leading to improved growth, biomass productivity, protein content, and pigment quality. Using fish waste as an organic nitrogen source is a potential sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for both fish waste valorization and Spirulina cultivation.

Mitochondrial Management of Reactive Oxygen Species

Gaetana Napolitano et al.

Summary: Mitochondria in aerobic eukaryotic cells not only produce energy but also harmful substances such as ROS, and possess an efficient antioxidant system to detoxify these substances. As ROS production increases, mitochondria are damaged and release more harmful substances, but their antioxidant system can detoxify exogenous ROS at the expense of reducing the equivalents generated in mitochondria.

Eugenio Geremia et al.

Summary: Microalgae have gained much attention in various fields of application, including food, animal feed, and polymers production. There is also growing interest in using microalgae for wastewater treatment, which has shown potential in reducing eutrophication chemicals and removing pollutants. The feasibility and costs associated with large-scale microalgae treatment remain the main challenges to be addressed.
