Circular use of feed by-products from alcohol production mitigates water scarcity

Isabel Schestak et al.

Summary: The distillery sector in the UK is a major industrial water user. This study provides new insights into the water scarcity footprint of Scottish single malt whisky and the potential impacts of using by-products as substitutes for feeds and energy carriers. By using by-products as animal feed, the water scarcity footprint and carbon footprint of alcohol production can be reduced. However, the offsets generated by by-products used for bioenergy are smaller. Water reuse and heat recovery should be prioritized to reduce the environmental footprint of whisky production.

Summary: This study examines how global methane budgets can be downscaled to national targets, and the implications of different downscaling rules for national food production and climate neutrality objectives, by studying four methods to determine national methane quotas across four countries with different agriculture, forestry, and socio-economic contexts.

Urban agriculture may change food consumption towards low carbon diets

Ivanka Puigdueta et al.

Summary: This study found that changes in food habits of citizens involved in urban gardening activities can lead to a potential reduction in individual carbon footprint, especially through reduced consumption of animal source foods. The results indicate that urban gardening activities could serve as social catalysts for promoting pro-environmental behavior and mitigating greenhouse gases in urban areas.
