Bacterial biofilm and extracellular polymeric substances in the moving bed biofilm reactor for wastewater treatment: A review

Kumari Uma Mahto et al.

Summary: Moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) are widely used in wastewater treatment due to their low operational costs, technical feasibility, and stability. They are capable of achieving high removal rates of nitrogen, organic carbon, and ammonium nitrogen, and modifications in the surface properties of the biocarrier materials can further improve removal efficiency.

Petrochemical condensate treatment by membrane aerated biofilm reactors: A pilot study

Irina Veleva et al.

Summary: The OxyMem membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) pilot, consisting of two 54 L reactors in series, demonstrated high removal efficiency and operational performance in treating real petrochemical condensate, with stable treatment efficiency of complex feed and diverse biofilm development. The pilot achieved oxygen transfer rate (OTR), oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE), and specific aeration efficiency (SAE) values that outcompete conventional activated sludge (CAS) processes, indicating the potential of MABRs to achieve higher OTE in treating petrochemical streams.

Recent advances in attached growth membrane bioreactor systems for wastewater treatment

Lijuan Deng et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of media used in attached growth MBR (AGMBR) for wastewater treatment, with conventional media enhancing pollutant removal and new media excelling in removing emerging pollutants. Additionally, media improve sludge characteristics and alleviate membrane fouling issues. Future research should focus on developing new functional media for wider spectrum pollutant removal and enhancing biogas generation in AGMBRs at pilot or full-scale levels.

Recent Advances in the Prediction of Fouling in Membrane Bioreactors

Yaoke Shi et al.

Summary: Compared to traditional activated sludge processes, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have many advantages, but membrane fouling remains a major obstacle to their wider application. There are some issues in predicting membrane fouling status, and there is still significant room for development in current techniques.
