POWER REDUCTION CONSIDERATIONS FOR BULK CARRIERS WITH RESPECT TO NOVEL ENERGY EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS

Milan Kalajdzic et al.

Summary: After introducing the energy efficiency design index (EEDI), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has pursued their goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The energy efficiency existing ship index (EEXI) is set to become applicable from 2023 and addresses the energy efficiency of already built ships. However, current ship designs cannot fully meet the emerging criteria and require reductions in engine power and speed to comply with energy efficiency standards.

An evidence-based assessment of IMO?s short-term measures for decarbonizing container shipping

Maximilian Schroer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the techno-economic implications of IMO's short-term measures on ships from a shipowner's perspective, and estimates the effect of six compliance options on six sample vessels. The results show that compliance is not straightforward and cost-effective, and engine power limitation is the most cost-effective option, but can lead to significantly increased sailing times.

Energetic and Ecological Effects of the Slow Steaming Application and Gasification of Container Ships

Ivan Gospic et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the energy and ecological benefits of slow steaming and gasification for a container ship, finding significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in different sea states. The potential annual reduction in CO2 emissions could be up to 11.66 kt/year for fuel oil mode, 8.53 kt/year for gas-operating mode, and 22 kt/year for gasification under realistic weather conditions along the investigated route.

A new model for simultaneously optimizing ship route, sailing speed, and fuel consumption in a shipping problem under different price scenarios

Mahsa Lashgari et al.

Summary: In recent years, liner shipping companies have faced challenges with bunkering and fuel price fluctuations, which they see as major operational expenses in maritime transportation. Consequently, reducing fuel consumption has become a focal point in the industry. An integrated approach to shipping deployment, routing, sailing speed, and bunkering optimization is necessary due to competitive conditions and uncertainties. Various existing models do not account for all these factors simultaneously. This study presents a scenario-based stochastic linear integer programming model for integrated decision-making on routing, sailing speed, and bunkering policy under fuel price uncertainty, showing potential cost reduction benefits alongside optimized speed and route decisions.
