Deciphering effects of humic acid in landfill leachate on the simultaneous nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) system from performance, electron transfer and microbial community

Yinuo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of humic acid (HA) on the Simultaneous nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) system for landfill leachate treatment. HA initially inhibited NH4+-N removal efficiency but the inhibition was released after system adaption. The study revealed the mechanisms of HA inhibition release, including efficient HA biodegradation, enhanced electron transfer efficiency, and improved metabolic division of microbial communities. These findings provide insights for the treatment of landfill leachate using the SNAD system.

Contradictory effects of calcium on biological and membrane treatment of municipal solid waste leachate: A review and process optimization via biogas recirculation

Shoukuan Yang et al.

Summary: This review investigates the effects of high calcium concentrations in municipal solid waste leachate on treatment processes and identifies optimal calcium ranges. The carbonatation-based approach for calcium carbonate precipitation is found to be the most effective method for removing excessive calcium. In-situ biogas recirculation is a promising alternative treatment method. Additionally, biogas purification and ammonia stripping can enhance bioenergy recovery and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Distinct membrane fouling characteristics of anammox MBR with low NO2--N/NH4+-N ratio

Chukuan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the membrane fouling characteristics of anammox MBR and the enrichment of slow-growing anammox bacteria. The results show that the membrane fouling characteristic of anammox MBR is different from other MBRs, with lower transmembrane pressure and lower amount of foulants. The key factors affecting membrane fouling are found to be polysaccharides of SMP in the gel layer and pore foulants.

Summary: This study established a two-stage combined process of partial nitrification-Anammox (PNA) and partial denitrification-Anammox (PDA) for advanced nitrogen removal from landfill leachate. The system achieved high nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE), with PNA and PDA contributing significantly. The study provides valuable insights for the practical application of PNA-PDA processes in landfill sites.

Implementation of a Degassing System at the MSW Landfill

Anna Shkileva

Summary: The Aitolo-Akarnania prefecture in western Greece is prone to strong earthquakes and large active fault systems. The degradation of the environment due to anthropogenic pollution caused by industrial and agricultural growth, urban expansion, population increase, and consumption levels indicates a looming environmental crisis on a global scale. The increase in solid household waste, overcrowded and smoking landfills, and unauthorized dumps are major sources of environmental pollution, calling for urgent and comprehensive solutions.

Emerging onsite electron donors for advanced nitrogen removal from anammox effluent of leachate treatment: A review and future applications

Yanyan Li et al.

Summary: In this review, the mechanisms and processes using organic matter, sulfide, and methane as onsite electron donors for residue nitrate reduction in anammox effluent of leachate are systematically summarized and discussed. It can be concluded that biodegradable organic matter is an effective electron donor, sulfide is a promising electron donor, methane is a potential electron donor. The potential applications in future based on anammox treatment of fresh and mature leachate using sulfide and methane as onsite electron donors are proposed, with energy-saving benefits.

Transformation mechanisms of refractory organic matter in mature landfill leachate treated using an Fe0-participated O3/H2O2 process

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: The Fe-0-O-3/H2O2 process effectively removed refractory organic matter in SAARB leachate, with high removal efficiencies for aromatic substances and more effective degradation of fulvic- and humic-like substances compared to other treatments. The process also showed enhanced degradation of CHONS compounds and higher production of bio-available CHO compounds, attributed to the Fenton process initiated by leached Fe2+ and H2O2 as well as the heterogeneous catalytic effect from iron (hydro) oxides for O-3/H2O2.

Characteristics of organic matter removed from highly saline mature landfill leachate by an emergency disk tube-reverse osmosis treatment system

Chuanwei Wu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of an emergency disk tube-reverse osmosis (DTRO) treatment system for highly saline landfill leachate in China. The system achieved over 83% water recovery rate, reduced the electrical conductivity of effluent, and effectively removed carbonaceous and nitrogenous pollutants. The DTRO system also successfully removed salts and refractory organic matter, showing potential for managing environmental risks in landfill leachate treatment.

Microbial community structure analysis in a hybrid membrane bioreactor via high-throughput sequencing

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the sludge retention time (SRT) can significantly affect the microbial community structure in a hybrid membrane bioreactor (HMBR), with different trends appearing in the three functional units. The largest number of mutual operational taxonomic units was found in the suspended filler mixture and suspended carrier with SRTs of 20 days and 30 days. Species belonging to Proteobacteria had the greatest contribution to between-group differences in the 10-day SRT group.

Optimizing granular anammox retention via hydrocycloning during two-stage deammonification of high-solid sludge anaerobic digester supernatant

Hui Gong et al.

Summary: High-solid sludge anaerobic digestion can lead to increased organic matters in digester supernatant, which promotes heterotrophic competition and reduces anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) retention. This study demonstrated effective anammox retention by hydrocycloning during a two-stage deammonification, providing information for reducing particle breakdown, pumping selection, and separation optimization.

Evaluating Microbial Interactions of Autotrophs and Heterotrophs in Partial Nitritation/Anammox (PN/A) Process by Experimental and Simulation Analyses

Guowang Lai et al.

Summary: The microbial interactions between autotrophs and heterotrophs in the PN/A bioreactor were studied through experimental and simulation analyses. It was found that the release of SMP from autotroph metabolism influenced the growth of heterotrophs, with oxygen concentration being a key factor in reactor performance. Increasing granular size could reduce heterotrophic growth but had little effect on SMP effluent concentration.
