Underutilized Lignocellulosic Waste as Sources of Feedstock for Biofuel Production in Developing Countries

Adewale Adewuyi

Summary: The need for an alternative energy source to fossil fuel has led to the search for reliable and sustainable sources that can address environmental challenges and stabilize energy prices. Biofuel, particularly bioethanol, has been identified as a superior alternative, but its high production cost remains a major challenge. Research is focused on finding cheap and sustainable feedstock for bioethanol production, with a current interest in lignocellulosic waste. This review discusses the conversion of lignocellulosic waste to bioethanol, the pretreatment steps involved, and the challenges, prospects, and economic aspects. While biological treatment appears promising, there are still some challenges that can be managed. Developing countries have significant opportunities for biofuel production cost reduction. Enzyme production cost has been identified as a challenge to the economic viability of lignocellulosic bioethanol, but the development of an efficient biocatalyst system for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and consolidated biomass processing may help overcome this challenge. In conclusion, effectively utilizing lignocellulosic waste in an efficient biocatalyst system can provide an economically viable means to overcome the challenges posed by fossil fuel.

The effect of soluble phenolic compounds from hydrothermally pretreated wheat straw on Trichoderma reesei cellulases and commercial enzyme cocktails

Anna S. Borisova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inhibitory effect of soluble phenolics in hydrothermal pretreatment liquor on Trichoderma reesei enzymes. Cellobiohydrolases were found to be the most sensitive to phenolics inhibition, while xylanases and endoglucanases could mitigate the inhibitory effect. The addition of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase was found to relieve the negative effect of phenolics, and the hydrolytic activity of commercial enzyme cocktail Cellic Ctec2 was enhanced in the presence of low concentrations of phenolics.

Revealing the mechanism of surfactant-promoted enzymatic hydrolysis of dilute acid pretreated bamboo

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of surfactants such as PEG 4000 and Tween 80 can significantly improve the enzymatic digestibility of dilute acid pretreated bamboo residue. Real-time surface plasmon resonance and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis revealed that Tween 80 performed better in separating irreversible cellulase adsorption onto lignin compared to PEG 4000, and PEG 4000 and Tween 80 intervened the interaction between lignin and cellulase through different mechanisms.

Effective biomass fractionation and lignin stabilization using a diol DES system

Jinyuan Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a diol-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) was developed to improve the saccharification of bamboo and valorize the lignin fraction. The DES pretreatment effectively removed lignin and xylan, resulting in enhanced glucan digestibility. The recovered lignin from DES pretreatment showed well-preserved 8-O-4 structures, indicating the potential of diol DES as a promising pretreatment solvent for cellulose and lignin conversion.

Evaluating the mechanism of milk protein as an efficient lignin blocker for boosting the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to improve the enzymatic digestibility of diluted acid pretreated bamboo residues (DAP-BR) by using low-cost milk protein. The effects of milk protein on the interactions between lignin and enzymes were investigated using fluorescence emission spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The results show that milk protein can decrease the adsorption of lignin on cellulase and intervene in the interaction between DAP-MWL and cellulase.

Lignin-Derived antioxidants as value-added products obtained under cavitation treatments of the wheat straw processing for sugar production

Liga Lauberte et al.

Summary: This study focused on the utilization of wheat straw for sugar production by pretreating it with low-frequency ultrasound (US) and hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) to obtain flavones-bound lignin. The procedures significantly decreased lignin content in the solid fraction while increasing ordered cellulose content. Through high-resolution mass spectrometry, low molecular weight lignin derivatives that could potentially be used as antioxidants were identified in the liquid phase after the treatment.
