A comprehensive multi-scale model for bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED)

Andrea Culcasi et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive process model for bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED), integrating multiple models at different dimensional scales. The model is validated using experimental data and used to assess the performance of the BMED technology for industrial-scale applications. The results demonstrate the effects of process conditions and membrane area on the BMED unit's performance.

Benthic biodiversity near brine discharge sites in the Port of Rotterdam

Eleni Avramidi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ecological conditions near the brine outfalls in the Port of Rotterdam and found that the benthic macrofaunal composition was lower in abundance and diversity compared to the nearby North Sea environment. The outfall area of the Botlek demineralized water plant showed the lowest abundance and diversity, while the outfall area of the Maasvlakte demineralized water plant had higher biodiversity associated with the presence of a large biogenic reef of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas.

Selective precipitation of calcium ion from seawater desalination reverse osmosis brine

Raffaele Molinari et al.

Summary: The study focused on the application of calcium precipitation reagents in removing/recovering calcium, providing a solution for the recovery of other valuable salts. By controlling parameters such as temperature and pH, efficient removal of Ca2+ and minimizing Mg2+ loss were achieved.

Optimizing resource flow of industrial processes, with a case study of zero liquid discharge at a copper smelting plant

Henric Lassesson et al.

Summary: The study aims to find the best use for solid residues in zero liquid discharge wastewater treatment, proposing a resource optimization methodology based on principles of reduce, replace, reuse, and recycle. This methodology is expected to lower barriers towards a more circular economy by focusing on preventable losses of valuable resources and being simple to use. Through this methodology, it was found that solid waste could be reduced by 58%-85% with lower operational costs.

Aspects of environmental impacts of seawater desalination: Cyprus as a case study

D. Xevgenos et al.

Summary: Cyprus heavily relies on seawater desalination for drinking water supply, with reverse osmosis technology dominating the total capacity. The environmental impacts on marine ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows, have been observed. In 2017, Cyprus produced 68.7 million cubic meters of desalinated water, resulting in 160 ktons of CO2 equivalent emissions.
