Factors influencing firm propensity for ISO 9001 withdrawal: Evidence on decertification tendency and antecedents

Summary: This study investigates the propensity of ISO 9001 certified companies to withdraw their certification, and identifies key factors such as barriers to initial certification, (lack of) external certification benefits, decertification motivations, and expected performance after decertification. By developing a structural equation model and analyzing survey data, the study contributes a systemic and comprehensive perspective on decertification, offering insights for theory and practice. The research addresses a major contradiction in the field and introduces novel variables to explain decertification propensity.
