Understanding breast cancer as a global health concern

Louise Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world, with a strong correlation to human development. Survival rates are lower in less developed regions, leading to global disparities. In order to address this urgent global health challenge, the World Health Organization has launched a new Global Breast Cancer Initiative, aiming to improve survival rates worldwide through health promotion, timely diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment and supportive care.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

RNA methylations in human cancers

Xiao Han et al.

Summary: RNA methylations play critical roles in regulating various biological processes and their dysregulation is closely related to human malignancies. The advancements in high-throughput sequencing technology have facilitated research on how methylation of coding and non-coding RNAs regulates cancer progression. This review discusses the regulatory role of representative RNA modifications in cancers and their potential clinical value in diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

Database-assisted global metabolomics profiling of pleural effusion induced by tuberculosis and malignancy

Guodong Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed a database-assisted global metabolomics method using mass spectrometry and identified metabolic differences between tuberculosis and malignant pleural effusions. Specific metabolites involved in different metabolic pathways were found to serve as non-invasive biomarkers for distinguishing between the two conditions.

The crucial roles of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification in the carcinogenesis and progression of colorectal cancer

Zhihao Fang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the association between changes in m(6)A levels and dysregulation of m(6)A regulatory proteins with CRC carcinogenesis and progression. Despite the unclear regulatory laws of m(6)A modification in CRC, a better understanding of these mechanisms could benefit the diagnosis and therapy of CRC.
