Summary: This study demonstrates the first immobilization of a chiral porous organic cage on thiol-functionalized silica to prepare novel chiral stationary phases for high-performance liquid chromatography. The prepared CSPs exhibited excellent enantioselectivity for the resolution of various racemates. The importance of the cationic imidazolium spacer for chiral separation was also demonstrated. The chiral POCs showed good chiral recognition complementarity with the two most popular commercial chiral columns.

Preparation of chiral stationary phase based on a [3+3] chiral polyimine macrocycle by thiol-ene click chemistry for enantioseparation in normal-phase and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography

You -Ping Zhang et al.

Summary: Polyimine macrocycles are a new class of organic macrocycles with cyclic structures and well-defined molecular cavities. They have attracted considerable research interest in molecular recognition and separation. In this study, a chiral polyimine macrocycle was bonded on thiol-functionalized silica gel using thiol-ene click chemistry to prepare a chiral stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. The fabricated column showed excellent chiral separation capability under both normal-phase and reversed-phase conditions, and exhibited good selectivity towards positional isomers. The study indicates the promising potential of this type of chiral macrocycles for enantioseparation in HPLC.

Inherent Ethyl Acetate Selectivity in a Trianglimine Molecular Solid

Donglin He et al.

Summary: A trianglimine macrocycle (TAMC) was reported to selectively adsorb ethyl acetate by forming a solvate, with crystal structure prediction showing it to be the lowest energy solvate structure. This solvate leaves a metastable, templated cavity after solvent removal. Adsorption and breakthrough experiments confirmed TAMC's adequate adsorption kinetics for separating ethyl acetate from azeotropic mixtures with ethanol.

Tuning the porosity of triangular supramolecular adsorbents for superior haloalkane isomer separations

Bin Hua et al.

Summary: The study compared the use of three trianglamine and trianglimine macrocycles as supramolecular adsorbents for the selective separation of halobutane isomers. The methylene-bridged trianglamine showed high selectivity in capturing 1-chlorobutane and 1-bromobutane, with purities of 98.1% and 96.4% respectively, due to the thermodynamic stability of the host-guest complexes. This suggests that molecular sorbents relying on specific molecular recognition events, like triangular pores, could be useful for energy-efficient separations in the future.
