Regularized second-order correlation methods for extended systems

Elisabeth Keller et al.

Summary: This paper explores how regularization can ameliorate the issues of second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) for metallic, polarizable, and strongly correlated periodic systems. Two regularized second-order methods are applied to various systems, leading to consistent improvements over the MP2 baseline with different regularizers found to be suitable for different systems.

Unphysical discontinuities, intruder states and regularization in GW methods

Enzo Monino et al.

Summary: By recasting the non-linear frequency-dependent GW quasiparticle equation into a linear eigenvalue problem, this study explains the occurrence of multiple solutions and unphysical discontinuities in various physical quantities computed within the GW approximation. The GW self-energy is treated as an effective Hamiltonian, which reveals the key signatures of strong correlation in the (N +/- 1)-electron states and their direct relation to the intruder state problem. A regularization procedure inspired by the similarity renormalization group is proposed to avoid these issues and accelerate the convergence of partially self-consistent GW calculations.

Recommendation of Orbitals for G0W0 Calculations on Molecules and Crystals

Linyao Zhang et al.

Summary: The present study systematically investigates the dependence of G(0)W(0) calculations on the choice of orbitals, finding that the percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange in density functionals strongly influences the predicted molecular ionization energy and crystal band gaps. The study also suggests that global-hybrid functionals provide more accurate band gaps for semiconductors at a reasonable cost compared to widely employed methods.

Exploring the statically screened G3W2 correction to the GW self-energy: Charged excitations and total energies of finite systems

Arno Forster et al.

Summary: In this study, we used the statically screened second-order exchange contribution to the GW self-energy to calculate a perturbative correction. We found that the second-order correction improved correlation energies and relative energies for many molecular systems. The correction consistently increased the LUMO quasiparticle energies, but there was no consistent trend for HOMO levels. The magnitude of the correction was smaller with the statically screened interaction compared to the dynamically screened one. The Quasiparticle self-consistent GW method was shown to be excellent for charged excitation of finite systems and could not consistently be improved upon by the G3W2 correction.

Toward chemical accuracy at low computational cost: Density-functional theory with σ-functionals for the correlation energy

Egor Trushin et al.

Summary: The introduced sigma-Functionals are based on the ACFD theorem and optimized for reaction and transition state energies, achieving accuracies close to 1 kcal/mol and approaching chemical accuracy. With mean absolute deviation of 1.25 kcal/mol for 10,966 reactions, the approach is more accurate than dRPA methods and comparable to high-level wave function methods. Non-covalent binding energies are also accurately predicted to within a few tenths of a kcal/mol. The method is highly efficient, requiring less computational time than a density-functional calculation with a hybrid functional and can be easily implemented in existing dRPA codes.

Chemical accuracy with σ-functionals for the Kohn-Sham correlation energy optimized for different input orbitals and eigenvalues

Steffen Fauser et al.

Summary: The newly introduced sigma-functionals for the Kohn-Sham correlation energy show higher accuracy in energy optimization, particularly for main group chemistry. Compared to PBE-based sigma-functionals, the ones based on PBE0 and B3LYP exhibit advantages in terms of computational accuracy and efficiency.

Coupling Natural Orbital Functional Theory and Many-Body Perturbation Theory by Using Nondynamically Correlated Canonical Orbitals

Mauricio Rodriguez-Mayorga et al.

Summary: A new family of electronic structure methods has been developed to capture dynamic and nondynamic correlation effects, incorporating NOFT and MBPT. Three scenarios were studied, showing that CCSD-based correction improves predictions compared to MP2, while RPA-based correction reduces computational costs. Various chemical problems were considered, with numerical tests revealing similar relative errors in De for RPA-based and CCSD-based corrections.

Low-Scaling GW with Benchmark Accuracy and Application to Phosphorene Nanosheets

Jan Wilhelm et al.

Summary: GW is an accurate method for computing electron addition and removal energies, but its conventional implementation has high computational cost, limiting its application to many systems. A low-scaling GW algorithm with improved accuracy was presented, demonstrating strong size-dependent variation in the fundamental gap of phosphorene nanosheets when applied.

Stefan Riemelmoser et al.

Summary: The OEP method provides a clear way to construct the Kohn-Sham potential, but solving the OEP equation is computationally expensive and must be done self-consistently; large scale solid state applications have so far only been done using QPA, neglecting certain dynamic screening effects; the exact RPA-OEP for 15 semiconductors and insulators was obtained through direct solution of the linearized Sham-Schluter equation.

Noncovalent Interactions from Models for the Moller-Plesset Adiabatic Connection

Timothy J. Daas et al.

Summary: The paper presents accurate models for the description of noncovalent interactions by interpolation along the Moller-Plesset adiabatic connection, which are size consistent for fragments with nondegenerate ground states, have the same cost as double hybrids, and do not require dispersion corrections. These interpolations greatly reduce the large MP2 errors for typical p-stacking complexes and outperform state-of-the-art dispersion enhanced functionals for a variety of data sets.

Selfconsistent random phase approximation methods

Jason M. Yu et al.

Summary: This Perspective discusses recent progress in selfconsistent calculations of ground-state energies using the random phase approximation (RPA) within the context of (generalized) Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory. The concept of functional selfconsistency (FSC) is introduced along with the development of the generalized KS semicanonical projected RPA (GKS-spRPA) method, which shows improvements in densities, binding energy curves, and molecular properties. The differences between KS and interacting densities without FSC and the performance of GKS-spRPA suggest that the KS potential for explicitly potential-dependent density functionals should be defined via the FSC condition.

Assessing the G0W0Γ0(1) Approach: Beyond G0W0 with Hedin's Full Second-Order Self-Energy Contribution

Yanyong Wang et al.

Summary: A self-energy approach beyond the Hedin's GW approximation is presented and benchmarked, showing superior performance. The addition of the full second-order self-energy (FSOS-W) contribution allows for a first-order vertex correction to GW and exhibits better scaling with system size for small- to medium-sized molecules. In specific cases, this approach outperforms traditional methods in accuracy and results.

Vertex function compliant with the Ward identity for quasiparticle self-consistent calculations beyond GW

Alexey Tal et al.

Summary: The approach extends the quasiparticle self-consistent method beyond the GW approximation by using a range-separated vertex function. It achieves accurate band gaps, dielectric constants, and band positions comparable to highest-level electronic-structure calculations without exceeding the cost of regular quasiparticle self-consistent GW. It introduces an exchange-correlation kernel that accounts for the vertex over the full spatial range, balancing the renormalization factor and effectively taking into account higher-order diagrams.

Tiling with triangles: parquet and GWγ methods unified

Friedrich Krien et al.

Summary: The formalism unifies parquet and Hedin's GW gamma approach into a single theory of vertex corrections, reformulating parquet equations in terms of boson exchange. The method has no drawbacks compared to previous parquet solvers and the significant advantage of vertex functions decaying quickly with frequencies and distances in real space, coinciding with the separation of length and energy scales of two-particle correlations into long/short-ranged and high/low-energetic.
