Metal-Organic Network-Forming Glasses

Nattapol Ma et al.

Summary: The crystal-liquid-glass phase transition in coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks offers opportunities for the development of a new class of amorphous materials. Rational design concepts can be used to fine-tune the desired properties. This review discusses the current achievements in understanding the anomalous phase transitions in CPs/MOFs and explores the criteria for classifying CP/MOF glasses and the strategies to obtain a glassy state.

Hypersensitivity of the Glass Transition to Pressure History in a Metal-Organic Framework Glass

Ang Qiao et al.

Summary: A recent study has found that certain metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses exhibit hypersensitivity of their glass transition temperature (T-g) to pressure history, with a much higher sensitivity parameter compared to other glass systems. The hypersensitivity was found to be caused by changes in the medium-range structure.

Synergistic Stimulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Stable Super-cooled Liquid and Quenched Glass

Zheng Yin et al.

Summary: In this report, researchers have successfully prepared metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses using vapor hydration and thermal dehydration methods. The introduction of structural disorders facilitated the formation of stable super-cooled liquid and quenched glass. The resulting porous MOF glass maintains framework connectivity.

Network-Forming Liquids from Metal-Bis(acetamide) Frameworks with Low Melting Temperatures

Mengtan Liu et al.

Summary: Molten phases of metal-organic networks offer exciting opportunities for using coordination chemistry principles to access liquids and glasses with unique and tunable structures and properties. General thermodynamic strategies provide increased enthalpic and entropic driving force for reversible, low-temperature melting transitions in extended coordination solids, illustrated through a systematic study of bis(acetamide)-based networks with record-low melting temperatures. Weak coordination bonds, conformationally flexible bridging ligands, and weak electrostatic interactions contribute to the low melting temperatures of these compounds, reducing enthalpy and increasing entropy of fusion.

The microscopic mechanism of bulk melting of ice

Clemens Moritz et al.

Summary: The study explores the initial stages of homogeneous melting of a hexagonal ice crystal, revealing the significant role of 5+7 type defects in the formation of the initial liquid nucleus. Like other solids, ice homogeneously melts through the prior accumulation of defects.
